Jan. 31, 2007 California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to build at least two new reservoirs in California, but has met stiff opposition from State Democrats, led by Don Perata. Schwarzenegger’s proposal is part of his “Strategic Growth Plan,” which aims rto address the needs of a state whose population will increase by 12 million over the next quarter century. He requests four to five billion dollars to build two new watersheds, one near Sacramento, the other in Fresno. Democrats cite the building of the Los Vaqueros reservoir near Brentwood, as an example of red tape, construction delays, lawsuits, hearings and cost overruns—which tripled the original estimate, and wind up costing taxpayers $4.5 billion. In 2004, Contra Costa County voters approved Measure N, which will fund a project to increase the storage capacity of Los Vaqueros from 100,000 to half a million acre feet. The dam was finished in 1999, after five years of construction. That same year, it was named the “Outstanding Achievement in Civil Engineering.” The reservoir was built to improve water quality, supply reliability and provide drought protection, but also has hiking trails and allows for fishing. Schwarzenegger’s plan is supported by the agriculture lobby, but it is expected that if his proposal is enacted, it will be tied up in litigation fueled by environmental groups. Tiger Woods came from behind on Sunday to win his 7th consecutive PGA event, leaving him four behind the record of 11 in a row set in 1945 by Byron Nelson. Sometimes it appears that Woods is bagging it on Thursday and Friday, then turning it up on Saturday and Sunday. How else can he motivate himself? Vijay Singh—the last man to win Player of the Year besides Tiger, has fallen off the radar. Phil Mickelson, well on his way to the third leg of a grand slam, melted down and watched as Tiger won the last two majors of ‘06. After winning PGA Rookie of the Year in 1996, Woods has won eight of ten Player of The Year Awards. In his 215 career tournaments played, he has won 55 times, finished second 20 times and third 17 times. (43% top three finishes). The fact of the matter is, everyone else is incapable of competing with him. Ditto for Roger Federer, who makes every Men’s tennis event a laugher. This is another good example of a man competing against boys. On February 26th, he will break Jimmy Connors’ record for consecutive weeks being ranked number one (160). In winning his tenth Grand Slam title, Federer won 21 consecutive sets. This leaves him but four behind Pete Sampras, which he should get no later than early 2008. And while I’m on the subject of sports, this just in: Indianapolis 34, Chicago 16. MVP, Dallas Clark. In Grayson, California, 35-year-old Anna Walker-Vogt was arrested after allegedly supplying youths with beer, and paying another teen $50 to drive them home. What followed was an accident that injured 13. Walker-Vogt is also accused of having sexual relations with one of the minors. She was jailed in Stanislaus County on fourteen felony charges: two counts of unlawful sex with a minor and 12 counts of child endangerment. Six misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor have also been added. Good luck plea-bargaining for a “lighter” sentence. After the cancellation of his daily squawk show, Quite Frankly, Stephen A. Smith will flex his acting chops Friday on an episode of the daytime drama General Hospital. Smith took responsibility for the show’s low ratings, saying "Remember, it was 'Quite Frankly With Stephen A. Smith.' The buck stopped with Me. This was not ESPN's fault - it was mine." Smith also serves as a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and analyst on ESPN’s NBA telecasts. Still waiting for my 2007 edition of Writer’s Market to arrive. Then I can junk my other copy, which is the 2000 edition. Coincidentally, I recently got rid of my 2000 version of Videohound’s Movie Golden Retriever by purchasing the 2006 edition.
