Turning Iraq Around: Possible Or Impossible?

By Michelle Malsbury
Jan. 30, 2007

Early this year President Bush contemplated and approved sending 21,500 more troops into Iraq. Congress and most of America are against this new deployment, as am I. After nearly four years of fighting and little progress will another 21,500 troops really make a difference?

Admiral William Fallon told the Senate Armed Services that he believed Iraq could be turned around in a short time. What has not been defined is exactly what that “short time” is in terms of weeks or months or years. Nor has this administration defined, in terms that the American public can understand, what the goals or milestones will be with regard to this newest deployment. Why such secrecy? Could it be that this is more of the same?

President Bush unveiled a three pronged approach to what his newest strategy is for “winning” this war with Iraq. Many experienced military advisors have stated that this war is not winnable in the military sense. Then why not just stop this madness and bring our troops back home and out of harms way?

According to most new polls Bush’s approval rating has sunk to a new all time low (28% according to MSNBC on January 29, 2007) and the longer that this war with Iraq drags out the more likely it may become that we need to band together to impeach him. This new congress owes a great deal to the people that elected them to office, the people who voted for changing the direction that this country has taken in the past six years. Can they deliver?

Serious questions that deserve a reply are:

  1. What are the milestones? How are they to be measured?
  2. What happens in the event the Iraqi’s fail to meet the milestones?
  3. When can the American public expect to see our troops come home?
  4. How much more is this war going to cost in terms of lives lost and money spent?
  5. Why is the Bush Administration playing hard ball with Iran when they have said they want to help reconstruct and open banking institutions in Iraq?
  6. Is Iran the next target in the crosshairs of this administration?
While I wait with bated breath for responses to those pressing questions and more this government presses onward with the deployment of more troops to this region where most accounts are that we cannot win, the costs continue to rise in terms of deaths and monies spent, this area becomes more unstable as each day passes, and no end can clearly be in sight. Either President Bush is buying time and has no real plan to end this war or he is inviting congress to move against him with impeachment proceedings. I say we cut to the chase and begin impeachment proceeding at the earliest possible moment. If you agree with me then please write or call your congress people and tell them that the time is now! Impeach Bush and all of his cronies that believe this war is going to be won! Move on with a leader who is capable of listening to what the people of America hold near and dear. The time is NOW! IMPEACH BUSH!
