Submarine

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Jan. 26, 2007

A small boat waited in the water beside the ship. People were slowly getting on, and soon all ten that were getting on were on. While getting on, one of the passengers, to break the quiet, yelled, “All aboard that’s going aboard,” but some of the others spoke only German, and did not understand what he said, and therefore did not know whether to laugh or not. The didn’t even smile. The one driving the boat was a woman with a deep tan and sandy blonde hair. She wore sunglasses. This is what she did all day. Drive the boat from the ship to the shore, and from the shore to the ship again.

Off the went, and the engine was powerful. You could glance up at the surrounding area, but it was so bright, that even with sunglasses it hurt your eyes. People found themselves looking downwards, or talking to the ones they were with, so as to avoid the brightness. The ten people wore shorts and shirts, all neat and bright colors. Some held cameras. They soon arrived at the shore and got off. Most of the people went to markets to wander around. Some bought silver, because there was silver in abundance there, on the small island. Two others went over to get a ticket to ride in a small submarine.

When the submarine came up from he water it looked like a toy, because it was so well painted, and yellow, with some green writing. It looked smart and proud, though only holding twenty passengers. Once the passengers were on, a woman gave a talk, and said that it was important that when the submarine was descending, that nobody got up from their seat. The seats were not really seats, but just two rows of benches in front of windows. The reason nobody was to stand up or change seats had to do with destabilizing the sensitive pressure inside of the vessel. Once they had gotten to the depths, you could move around, but not on the way, and not while going up again either.

When they were about to finish their descent, two of the passengers stood up, and ruined everything. The sub had to go all the way up again in order to gain or reset some sort of equilibrium that had been lost due to this movement. The two that had gotten up had not understood the instructions since they did not speak English. After what seemed forever, the sub had gone up, and then down again. Outside in the water was a reef full of hundreds of little fish, whose colors and stripes and variations were so delicate and intricate, that it looked as if someone had spent years painting them. Everyone looked out there, through the little windows. It was half dark in the sub, and there was a soft green light. The people seemed so fleshy, so extra human on the inside of the great machine and its circular windows. It was like a dream.

When the time was finished for watching the sights outside in the water, the sub came up. There had been a moment where one of the passengers felt a bit claustrophobic, and felt a small panic, but he had not said anything to anyone about it. He was convinced it wouldn’t have happened if they had stayed on schedule, and those foreign people hadn’t screwed things up a bit. He thought everyone should know English, and that it should be some kind of prerequisite of being a citizen in the world. When the passengers got out from the sub, again there was the bright sun, and people went their own ways, exploring the market place, or going on short bus tours up into the countryside.
