By Kristy Robinett Jan. 24, 2007 Rod Stewart, the sixty-something with the raspy voice, is back on tour to show that Mick Jagger isn’t the only oldie that can still strut around and make millions. Rod the Mod showed up at the Palace of Auburn Hills ( Michigan ) last night, in the round, in all his Scottish splendor. He was introduced by bagpipes as the stage was donned in Scottish plaid. His band also sported the plaid in different fashions from belts, vests to earrings and headbands. It was tough to miss that Rod keeps his heritage close to his heart. With a cancer scare in 2000 where Rod had to re-learn to sing, you wouldn’t have ever known it as the smoky voice sounded like radio Rod, with his distinct sound, crazy hair and refreshing smile. There were a few times that I saw him struggle with some notes and draw the microphone away from his mouth – so what, I say! I found the instrumentation incredible as they utilized two drum kits, a banjo, a sax, a violin and other miscellaneous instruments that created an original sound. The musicians really were incredible, besides for a drummer that I swear has to be a serial killer. Rod didn’t go for beauty when choosing his dancers and band, but instead talent. This may sound demeaning, but I give him credit. They looked like normal people who could dance and play and not as if they just walked out of a Hollywood movie set. Rod’s dancing, however did prove to be embarrassing. Several times I felt like I was watching my father shuffle across the stage, swinging his hips and kicking his legs up. He didn’t care that he was waltzing around making a fool of himself. The sold out show proved that everybody wanted to see just that. Cover songs along with his old tunes – he sang em all. Well, except for “Sexy”, which they began to sing and then stopped, drawing boos from the crowd. Maggie May was an encore song, but he messed up the lyrics, which I found hysterical as it is one of his biggest hits. He laughed it off and kept going instead of flying into his normal snits and tizzies he is notorious for. I went into the concert not being a huge Rod fan and came out minus a fan shirt on, however I must say that the show was entertaining and through the hundreds of concerts that I have been to, this is only the third one that I stayed until the very end. And it wasn’t to wait out the crowd. Way to go, Rod! You made Mick Jagger proud! ------------ About the author: Kristy Robinett (formerly Kristy Schiller) is an HR Specialist and freelance author.
