Testing Spiritual Things

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1)

All religions are good; right?

No.

As with many generalizations, the point that all religions are good must be regarded with skepticism.

Many religions are nothing more than exercises in human interrelation. There is nothing inherently wrong with that when the focus is on the eternal soul of man, but all too often the focus is on the physical need over that of the spiritual.

This was not the ministry practiced by Jesus.

Jesus taught the people he faced and then attended their physical needs. He spoke of his Father and the blessings from the heavens. He explained the Law of Moses and encouraged repentance from the heart. He denied no one either benefit. The spiritual message preceded the physical relief. It was necessary the people realize who was supplying the physical helps so thanksgiving could be directed at the proper being.

Many ministries today do not point to God. There are humans who stand between the God of all helps and the people; expecting praise and world-wide acknowledgement of their works and their open piety. Jesus said such people will have their reward but those who enter their closets and remain unseen in their piety would find greater blessing.

“Every spirit” is not trustworthy. Every spiritual exercise is not profitable. There are works of “wood, hay, stubble that a Christian would be wise to avoid. Works and ministry are not for personal glory or gain. Jesus did not come to set himself as king of the Jews. It was the responsibility of the Jews to recognize and accept their king. By the time Jesus came on the scene, the religious leaders of God’s chosen nation were completely polluted of the spirit. They had no clue as to who Jesus was, but should have recognized him as God’s son immediately, had they been paying attention to their own prophets.

There are true prophets as there are false prophets. The false prophet discounts the miracles and the message of the Messiah. The false prophet scoffs and creates alternatives to faith that place men above the creator of men and places animals on an equal footing with men.

The true prophet has had his words tested and shown to be true. The words of Isaiah and Jeremiah; the words of Daniel and Joel; the words of the other Old Testament prophets speaking of the one who would come to redeem men of sin and reestablish man’s possibility of a relationship with the Father; all finding fulfillment in the person and nature of the Son of God, Jesus, the creator and the life of mankind.

Because of the influx of false prophets we stand in the truth of scripture. What the prophets wrote of old and what the Apostles wrote of new speak lovingly of the same individual. The Old Testament Messiah is the Christ of the New Testament history. Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. The Spirit of God is the author to whom we owe our eternal existence. He penned the studies that are the books of the Bible. He is the force behind the myriad councils that managed to collect, protect and preserve the words of the men he inspired to take pen to hand. We do not follow “cunningly devised fables”.

False prophets have chosen to ignore the testimony of God the Spirit. They prefer the words of men and the many tomes of various clergy that speak of how to please God by works or fidelity to man-created dogma. These are easy to see.

More subtly, false spirits stand in philosophical disguises; posing as some type of legitimate science or some form of humanistic political organization that explains the many ways man is better off leaving God in the past.

All these spirits demand trial. There are many more false prophets in the world than true. There are very few voices that acknowledge the real God of Heaven.

Just know Christian; when you became a believer you were given a great gift. The Spirit of God resides in you to give you wisdom and guide you into all truth. The false is easily known. The false rejects the only possibility of salvation while declaring there are many ways to paradise. We know differently because Jesus explained it plainly.
