M.T.A. Is Above The Law

By Arthur L Burton III
Jan. 15, 2006

Driving in the City limits of New York City you can see buses disobeying every traffic law. They do not merge safely into oncoming traffic, they refuse to stop at the red or slow down at the yellow. A Bus driver for the MTA has the nerve to pull a bus behind a car that parked 2 feet in front of the bus stop and he began blowing his horn and yelling out of the window gesturing his fist towards the driver of the car. The police came to the scene and they just watched as the MTA worker went around the car and left. When the MTA went on strike they inconvenienced so many customers and they came back to work with the same disrespectful attitudes that most of them possess. I find it absurd how an MTA token worker does not say thank you to a customer who is purchasing a metro card from them. I guess that they are unaware that if everyone were to use the machines there would be no need for them. The Union ’s are a great benefit for workers who work for the MTA because it means that they will have a job forever. MTA ride the trains free and they are still unhappy, they receive a very large salary especially for the education that most have. An average worker with a BS degree gets about 40,000.00, whereas an MTA worker makes somewhere on average anywhere from 50,000.00 to 60,000.00 dollars annually. There is a need within the New York City codes and regulations that will enforce courteousness and diversity of these MTA workers.

Have you ever tried to call and complain on an MTA worker through the hotline? The person taking the complaint usually has a curt response and takes the information down and maybe a month later the MTA worker will be spoken too if they find it to be warranted. In NYC, there are plenty of people complaining about the buses and the MTA workers attitudes but there is nothing done about it. Legality works both ways in NYC and that is a benefit for anyone who is unsatisfied with services rendered. The Governor controls the MTA and since we have a new elect he needs to hear the complaints. The new Governor is no stranger to New York City and neither is his Lieutenant Governor, so the complaints and requests for changes are considered.

Some consumers believe that a fine for the MTA strike was sufficient but the money of the fine money was made in a few hours after the strike was over so the fine was no strain. Breaking the law seems to be a trait by the MTA Union and there needs to be a stronger penalty in place for Unions that consistently believe that if they break the law that they can pay money and everything will go on as business as usual.
