Bush's War Plan-More of the Same?

By Michelle Malsbury
Jan. 11, 2007

Nearly four years after claiming "Victory" from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier in full flight suit, after 3,000 plus American soldiers died bravely, after it has been claimed a civil war, and Trillions of dollars later, President Bush has finally accepted responsibility for this debacle in Iraq which is a step in the right direction. Condi Rice said "We cannot afford to fail." With what do we measure success or failure in this war?

Generals on the ground in Iraq have stated on record that more troops will not change the plight of this war-torn region. The Iraq Study Group, a bi-partisan congressional sampling, said that the United States needs to engage Syria and Iran in talks to help quell this violence and work toward peace and stability. Iran and Syria want to have equality for all neighbors in this region and are open to the discussion of such. Both maintain that they are enriching uranium for peaceful purposes and not aiding the instability in Iraq. The Bush Administration has flatly refused to speak to the leaders in either Syria or Iran to help stabilize this area unless they do as Bush wants. With neither party moving toward the middle ground it is unlikely that there be resolve on this issue.

Last evening President Bush unveiled his latest strategy for "winning" in Iraq. President Bush plans to send 21,500 more troops into Iraq at a cost of $5.6 Billion more dollars along with what he calls "benchmarks" for the Iraqi government to quell the mounting violence and disorder. The "benchmarks" are set out for November of 2007 and not clearly stated to the general public. There are no timetables for removing our troops which was what the American public voted for this past November. Other criteria include sharing all oil revenues with various religious sects in Iraq evenly and to have the people of Iraq contribute $10 Billion dollars toward reconstruction of their infrastructure.

Barack Obama (D-IL) said this new strategy is like "babysitting a civil war". Dick Durbin (D-IL) said that this new congress will be asking more questions of this Administration than the previous congress ever did and plans to explore options that might restrict President Bush from expanding his mission. Ike Skelton (D-MO) said this plan from President Bush has come about three and a half years too late and several hundred thousand troops short.

Personally, I agree with Obama, Durbin, and Skelton. I would like to see this congress stand up with the voices of the people who elected them by cutting off funding and demanding that this war come to an immediate close! Please call or write your local congress people and ask them to listen to our voices as we speak about changing the direction of this nation for the betterment of all people around the globe.
