Jan. 8, 2007 Recently, Angelina Jolie criticized Madonna for the methods she used in adopting her African baby (David Banda). She claims that Madonna was wrong to attempt to adopt from a country (Malawi), where there are no legal adoption laws in place and where the child's father is alive and well. I DO NOT like Madonna and am no fan of that pretentious, arrogant, phony woman who believes that the entire world revolves around her every whim. She is as ridiculous as her fake British accent. What bothers me is that Angelina is an even bigger hypocrite. Here is a woman who has NEVER adopted a needy child from the country where she was born and that made her rich and famous. Here is a woman who claimed that the root of many of her past problems and insecurities (self-mutilation among them), were the result of a father who left her and her family when she was a child. Here is a woman who had no qualms about doing the same to another woman when she got involved with a married man. Of course, I blame Brad Pitt equally for the way he behaved when he dumped his then wife Jennifer Anniston and I realize that they probably had problems in their marriage prior to his hooking up with Angelina. That doesn't excuse the way they handled themselves when they first got together. The pretending, the lies (Angie was quoted as saying that "I don't need Brad Pitt" and "I would never get involved with a married man"), while they were posing for a magazine spread depicting them as a happy family surrounded by children (not their own) while Brad was still married to someone else. How does she reconcile this behavior with her ever constant put-downs of her own father for doing the exact same thing to her mother? Actors are notoriously insecure and attention seeking and this is exemplified in Angelina's need to not only adopt a child but to constantly publicize her methods. She allows her children to be photographed professionally for millions of dollars and even though she claims to contribute the money to charity, she is still exposing innocent children to the world at large and invading their privacy in doing so. Closing down an entire country to give birth to her first biological child was so ridiculous that I could not believe that she got away with it. I guess it's true that money talks and bullshit walks. Why isn't Angie looking to adopt a needy American child? Does she not know that there are thousands of children in the United States who are orphaned and who need good homes? Could it be because she gets far more attention if she goes to a country like Africa or Cambodia and it makes her look like some kind of martyr if she appears to want to save the world? Is she merely being "trendy"? Angelina Jolie is not one to throw stones at glass houses and she certainly is NOT the ambassador that I would select to represent my country. The United Nations often bestows courtesy titles on the rich and famous and all they are required to do is make a few appearances and speak some sanctimonious words to the media in order to fulfill their title as a good will Ambassador. Angelina Jolie has taken her title a step farther and now sees herself as a Mother Theresa-like figure to the poor and destitute. When you think that just a few short years ago, Angie was wearing a vile of blood around her neck, bragging about her padded leather "Sex" chamber and about her trysts in hotel rooms with her lovers (male and female), it's hard to believe that she suddenly became a Saint over-night. In a recent photo-op I noticed that Brad and Angie were posed on the red carpet with Brad assuming his usual downward glance in the direction of Angie's nether regions. He used the same pose in his wedding photo to Jennifer Anniston. This is the man who his publicists want everyone to believe is the epitome of Mid-West values and morals. It's true that many people stray in their marriages and I have no doubt that Brad was no different from millions of other spouses who want to see if the grass was greener on the other side. The difference here is that he did his lawn mowing in a very public way and wound up looking like a wimp and an idiot in the process. He hardly knew Angelina before he petitioned the courts to have Maddox and Zahara Jolie's names changed to Jolie-Pitt. He seems to do whatever she wants him to do and we are all supposed to grovel at his feet because he is named the sexiest man alive. The press speaks of their biological child as if she is fated to be the most beautiful child in the world because of her parent's gene pool and I wonder how that will play out when that child may want to accomplish something other than being beautiful later in her life? Will she be expected to be beautiful forever? Will any other accomplishments that she may achieve be over-looked because she is a product of two people who the media refer to as the world's most beautiful couple? Despite the fawning and the powerful hold that these two people seem to have over society, I have no respect for either of them. They are simply two good looking actors who happen to have a lot of money and can do things that having that money allows them to do...like shutting down a small country simply to gestate and give birth. Madonna is no shining example of what anyone should aspire to be in my opinion but she is no worse then Angelina who needs to keep her mouth shut and stop buying into her own publicity. I am so sick and tired of these people and their pronouncements that seem to be chewed up, digested and passed off as gospel, that I felt the need to speak out. I have lived long enough to have witnessed greatness in the world and to know the difference between selflessness and self-promotion. It would be nice for future generations if we all came back down to earth where these faux profits and saints are concerned and looked at them as real human beings who make just as many mistakes and are just as human as the rest of us.
