Jan. 5, 2007 I once wrote an article about the cult of celebrity and how many people worship the rich and famous. It disgusted me then and it disgusts me even more now. Many kids look up to the current flavor of the month in the entertainment business. The Hilton sisters, Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears, etc. Here is a little sample of what is going on in the world of young celebrities and some not so young celebrities. I also believe that it is going on throughout our country and it needs to be addressed and dealt with for the sake of our children. In Hollywood there are events called "Plate Parties" that occur on an almost nightly basis. They may also be occurring in a place near you without your knowledge and your children and friends may be willing participants. Forewarned is forearmed so I am going to spell out what these "Plate Parties" consist of and how they work. A "Plate Party" is where a group of people gather and plates are passed around containing various drugs so that everyone can select from the menu of drugs available. Each plate has a different drug on it. Here are some examples of what kinds of drugs are passed around and are on the menu at these parties: Cocaine: Powerful, addicting, induces a state of euphoria and produces an intense but short high that lasts around two to four hours. Heroin: Extremely potent opiate which is highly addictive and produces a blissful state that lasts for four to six hours. Taken in large enough doses it can induce sleep. OxyContin: Another powerful opiate known as "Hillbilly Heroin" that gives the user a relaxing high that lasts for four to six hours. Crystal Meth: A powerful and addicting stimulant that gives the user a strong feeling of euphoria and excitement and lasts from six to eight hours and maybe even longer in some cases. Xanax: This is a sedative used to treat anxiety and depression and induces a feeling of relaxation. It lasts for between three to four hours. Adderall: A central nervous system stimulant that affects nerves and chemicals in the brain that contribute to hyperactivity. It gives a very speedy high and creates an increased ability to focus for extended periods of time. The high lasts for about six hours. Ecstasy: ("E"): This is the street name for of the synthetic, psychoactive stimulant MDMA and induces a state of enhanced enjoyment from tactile experiences (including sex). It induces a long high which lasts from six to ten hours. Vicodin: A less potent opiate painkiller usually used for post-surgical pain and causes a numbing, tingling sensation of relaxation. The duration of it's high is about four to six hours. A mixture of many of these drugs can result in seizures, comas and death. They are all addictive and require multiple doses to keep the high going. The cult of drug use is growing daily and not just in Hollywood. It is happening everywhere and it may be happening to someone that you know...or to you. I use the example of Hollywood celebrities to stress the fact that many of our kids and our young adults look up to these people and want to imitate them due to their media portrayal of being rich, beautiful and famous. They receive free gifts, travel accommodations and are often seen living a glamorous, although deceptive lifestyle. Some young children don't see beyond the glamour and realize how messed up these celebrities really are. I once heard a fifteen year old extolling the virtues of how "cool" it is to get busted for a DUI....how sick is that? If you do nothing else for your children, talk to them about the above listed drugs and explain the affects that they have on people. Tell them what is behind the quick high and the desire to join in and be like their friends who may use these drugs. Education, information, and setting a good example are the ONLY ways to fight the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol so don't drop the ball. Just saying no isn't enough unless the child has the necessary information to understand what they are saying no to. Don't let the Lohans and the Hiltons and the rock stars be a role model for your child or anyone else close to you who is vulnerable.....YOU be the role model. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling. https://www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=27335 Email: writers2@cox.net Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
