Doing Their Jobs
By Michelle Malsbury
Jan. 5, 2007
Compean, Ramos, and a third border patrol agent noticed a
suspicious looking van near a levee outside of the border town of Fabens, Texas
on February 17, 2006. They began to follow the suspicious van and unknown driver.
The driver of the van panicked and stopped the van on top of the levee,
disembarked, and scrambled for the opposite side of the river. The border
patrol agents called out for the driver to stop or suffer the consequences. The
fleeing driver stood momentarily, turned and pointed what looked like a gun at
the agents. Ramos called out again, fired one shot toward the moving target,
and believed he had missed the driver as he fled because they all watched the
driver continue to flee, then jump into another van that was waiting to pick
him up. At that time they had no idea there were 800 pounds of marijuana inside
the original van driven by Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila. (www.wnd.com)
The United States government paid for the medical treatment
of the injured and fleeing Aldrete-Davila giving him full immunity from
prosecution for the confiscated 800 pounds of marijuana found in his van and/or
conspiracy/intent to sell drugs in the United States prior to filing charges
against Complean and Ramos. Complean and Ramos were confounded by this
development. The two border patrol agents proceeded to trial by jury and we
later found guilty as charged much to the chagrin of those who followed these
proceedings. (www.wnd.com )
Yesterday marked the last day of freedom for quite some time
for Complean and Ramos, who believed they were merely doing their jobs. Jose
Compean will serve 12 years and Ignacio Ramos will serve 11 years and one day
for using potentially deadly force to subdue a fleeing criminal in the
commission of a felony drug crime. The attorney for Complean and Ramos asked
for those charges to be dropped based on information given down by three jurors
that stated they were coerced into a guilty verdict in this case.
According to the web site www.legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com
I offer the following definition for jury tampering.
jury tampering n.
the crime of attempting to influence a jury through any means other than
presenting evidence and argument in court, including conversations about the
case outside the court, offering bribes, making threats, or asking
acquaintances to intercede with a juror. (See: jury, subornation
of perjury)
If in fact these jurors were tampered with
and that can be proven this case may be considered a mistrial and the
defendants could be set free. Don’t you think this should at least be
investigated? I do. Contrary to what appears to be prudent in this situation
nothing has been done to either prove or disprove jury tampering and the men
charged in this case will begin serving their lengthy terms today.
Many members of congress lobbied to no avail the Bush
Administration to pardon these two men because they were, in fact, doing their
jobs. What kind of message does this send to the drug dealers from Mexico or other
countries? Why did our legal system let the drug dealer off scott
free while these two men get hung out to dry? If you believe this was the wrong
message and the wrong people were charged in this case please call or write
your local congress people inviting them to place pressure on the Bush
Administration to pardon these innocent men!
