![]() By Judy Ramsook Jan. 4, 2007 The world has never been as connected as it is today. Knowledge about any and everything is widely available via the internet. Just think it and you can google it, froogle it or yahoo it. It’s an information paradise out here on the world wide web. And as we look up, dissect and store some of this information for further use, we can also sift out the useful bits from the things that don’t affect us. Knowledge is, after all, a wonderful thing, it’s what you do with it that counts. In so doing, I have compiled a little list of some of the things that are useful, annoying or just out there, you decide. They are as follows: This one has probably been beaten to death, but we now know all the dangers smoking tobacco can bring about. It’s not easy to quit this habit though. It’s harder if you try to quit cold turkey because it just makes it easier to start up again. Or if you quit this way, new stressful situations that arise can encourage someone to start up again. There is so much nutritional information out there that we can now choose whether or not we want to prolong our lives by consuming the things that are good for us, or take us on a much faster route to death’s door by consuming the things that are delicious but bad for us. With the recent Bird Flu and Mad Cow disease scares, some people have instantly gone vegetarian. Then while such individuals were happily becoming accustomed to their no meat diet, there came along the Ecoli scare with the spinach and green onions. Even though the ban has been lifted on the spinach and green onions, some people are still exercising caution when purchasing more spinach and green onions. And others have probably decided to stay away from such greenery for a while. Consuming water has probably never been so fashionable. Everywhere you go, people are seen carrying around bottled water. Athletes and the non athletic types alike. They don’t leave home without their brand of liquid we cannot live without. Apparently it is suddenly unsafe to drink tap water, something generations of people were consuming before bottled water came along and made quite a splash in the world of finance. Music lovers around the globe have never had it so easy. Now you can store more than two thousand of your favourite songs on a device known as an IPOD. Or if that’s out of your price range, you can get the IPOD look alike or clone for a much lower price. Gone are the days when you lugged around a Walkman, cassette player or boombox. Just upload your songs on the IPOD, and voila, you’re in business. There is so much medical information available on the world wide web, that someone can probably go into cardiac arrest from learning about all the things we now know, as opposed to what we did not know prior to the introduction of the information super highway. Also, all this available information can allow someone to formulate his/her own diagnosis before taking that trip to the doctor’s office. There is no excuse for anyone to be suffering from a case of ignorance in this day and age. And if someone is suffering from that, it is probably because he/she is not surfing the internet in search of all things informative. Maybe in some parts of the world, the phrase, ‘ignorance is bliss’ might still be of some importance. But here out on the world wide web, it’s more of a case where ignorance used to be bliss. ------------ About the author: Born and raised in the former British colony of Trinidad & Tobago, Judy Ramsook came to the US in the mid eighties where she attended San Antonio College and the University Of Texas At San Antonio.
