Al Gore And His Mansion

By Nicholas Olson
Feb. 28, 2007

Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make a cake, right? Or sometimes you have to be a hypocrite to prove a point. C'mon, give the guy a break.

As most liberals will agree, the Democrats lie to you behind your back while the Republicans will just lie to your face, albeit a lie of omission more than likely.

But you have to ask who isn't a hypocrite? We all are. Al Gore is no different from any of us, albeit he speaks up and must make environmental sacrifices to get the message across.

But what do we all do? Do we break eggs to make our cakes? If course we do. We don't have ill intents many of the times, much like our current administration does. you see, Gore doesn't repeal Environmental Protection Agency rules to allow older power plants to circumvent the use of mandated scrubbers; scrubbers that Richard Nixon required them to have.

And the fact that travel is cumbersome, no matter how you get around, is another things that goes along with having been the vice president of this country. You see, once you get to the position, you are required to have the security detail that keeps you from being killed by some wacko.

But he is more than likely not the best example of environmentalism. To err is human, right? I'm sure he is trying to correct his ways, like we should all do. It's just he has this ginormous spotlight on him while the rest of us get to walk around doing whatever. That's fair, right?

So maybe this bad press can equal a wake up call to the rest of us. Maybe if he and his cohorts work to decrease their failings then maybe the rest of us can follow suit or even begin to, you know, be environmentally responsible.

But, you ask, what can we do? We are mere players in this world. We can't do much, can we, Nick? how about this. How about instead of bloveating and acting all smug because we want to take down another idol, let's try something as simple as changing the air filter in our car or getting as tune up.

Or we can use that recycle bin we were issued for glass, plastics and paper. Or what if we turned off a few more lights in our house when we aren't using them? If we collectively do these things, we can create change. Maybe it isn't that someone is a hypocrite so much as we want them to be one.

Americans like our celebrities until we want to turn on them. Sometimes this stems from jealousy, other times it is because we get tired of hearing about them. We bore of our icons easily even though we had a huge hand in making them as such.

That's why it is funny that we want to be so much like them. So that we can have what they have and do what they do. So let's not be like them and be conservationists, even if our neighbor doesn't feel the same. Lead by example, not by shouting the loudest.

Peace.
