Feb. 23, 2007 Sometimes one hears the lamentation that Jews suffer discrimination somewhat like that suffered by Blacks and Hispanics. If so, it certainly doesn’t show up in the allocation of seats in the US Senate. The anti-Black, anti-Hispanic, pro-Jewish bias is so clear-cut, indeed shocking, that it takes a lot of nerve to lump the three groups together as fellow victims of the same sort of prejudice. Consulting Information Please Almanac and Jewish Virtual Library, we can find approximate populations of the three groups, which are largely separate, with very little overlapping. From these and from a recent estimate of the population of the US , we can also calculate demographic percentages, which I have listed below: Total
US population 296,400,000 Blacks………Population 37,900,000………12.8% of total US Hispanics………Population 42,700,000………14.4% of total US Jews………Population 6,200,000………2.2% of total
US Since there are 100 seats in the US Senate, we can easily calculate immediately the number of seats that each group would have, if the seats were distributed on an equitable basis. Blacks would have 13 seats. Hispanics would have 14 seats. Jews would have 2 seats. Of course, I realize the seats are distributed on a statewise basis, but I submit that Blacks in New Hampshire and blacks in Vermont would feel more solidarity with each other than the two subgroups would feel with the non-Black residents of their respective states. That the inequity is built-in by the Constitution does not alter the fact that it is an inequity and should be remedied. So how many US Senate seats do the three groups have? Blacks have 1 seat. Hispanics have 3 seats. Jews have 13 seats. Here are the names and party affiliations of the three groups of senators: Black: Barack Obama (Democrat… Illinois ) Hispanic:
Mel Martinez (Republican... Florida ) Robert Menendez (Democrat… New Jersey ) Ken Salazar (Democrat… Colorado) Jewish: Barbara Boxer (Democrat... California ) Ben Cardin (Democrat... Maryland ) Norm Coleman (Republican... Minnesota ) Russ Feingold (Democrat... Wisconsin ) Dianne Feinstein (Democrat...
California ) Herb Kohl (Democrat... Wisconsin ) Frank Lautenberg (Democrat... New Jersey ) Carl Levin (Democrat... Michigan ) Joseph Lieberman (Democrat... Connecticut ) Bernie Sanders (Independent…
Vermont ) Charles Schumer (Democrat... New York ) Arlen Specter (Republican... Pennsylvania ) Ron Wyden (Democrat... Oregon ) This situation is brought about by the fact that Jews as a group have higher incomes than any other ethnic or religious group, and many of the wealthiest Americans are Jewish. They lavish campaign contributions on their own candidates and upon Gentile candidates who are willing to do their bidding. This may
seem very reasonable to some people who might say, “More power to them if they can do it!” But it is hard to reconcile that attitude with a belief in democracy. Such an attitude comes near to endorsing oligarchy, a system of government whereby a select few actually rule. It matters little whether it is an oligarchy de jure or an oligarchy de facto. In fact, it would be better to know from the start what we’re up against, instead of continuing the old pretense that all men are created equal.
