Does Congress Even Read the Constitution?

By Craig Chamberlain
Feb. 21, 2007

Apparently our new congressional oligarchs never got around to reading the document that they are supposed to be bound by and serve. We have Congress, through back door means, attempting to cut funding for the war in Iraq, and leave our troops high and dry in the process.

These back door methods include setting requirements and time limits in a way to cut funding all together. Now, it is the right of the House of Represenatives to cut off funding if it wants to. The constitution gives them the purse strings. Yet Congress is far too cowardly(after all a genetic defect leaves 95% of all politicians without a spine) to cut off funds directly so they need to make it an attack on a President they openly hate rather than the troops they secretly despise as mercenaries and war criminals. They should at least have the courage of their convictions to attack the troops, and the war effort, openly by admitting they want to cut off funding and help the enemy.

The part of the constitution that this congress doesn't seem to get is that the President is the commander in chief. A Congress of 535 does not lead us in war time, and it shouldn't. The morons in the Capitol Building couldn't run a bake sale let alone a war.

No, it is always better for one person to have the final say, in military matters, rather than try to order the troops by committee. Congress tries to say,but not say, through non binding resolutions, that he can't send additional forces to baghdad.

Both Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton have said that President Bush lacks the authority to go to war with Iran. First of all we're already at war with Iran, and have been since 1979. Secondly, President Bush is unlikely to attack Iran. Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton just tried to ignore the problem as best they could. At best they tried half measures. Lastly, he does have the authority and should use it(though he won't).

I can think of a President named Clinton who didn't get congressional authority to wage war on Serbia or Iraq. In fact in the history of the United States only five wars have been declared by Congress. The war of 1812, the Mexican war, the Spanish American war, World War one, and World War Two.

The quasi war, the barbary wars, the civil war, Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Panama, Kosovo, were all undeclared. Not to mention the Indian wars and the other conflicts this country has been involved in. They were not declared but were perfectly legal.

Congress should remember its constitutional role and stop trying to act as commander in chief and let the President do his job.
