Feb. 18, 2007 Recently, in response to my article on the supreme importance of money in this world, Tom Pain got on his high horse, sanctimoniously comparing himself favorably with me. Surprise, surprise, hey? After all, I am just a lonely vagabond and probably a fugitive, whereas he has a warm, happy relationship with his family, whom he loves and who love him. He would not exchange that for all the money in the world. There's a lot of truth in his characterization, I thought to myself, and wouldn't I be happier if I had a nice, secure job in an American metropolis like Dallas, where Pain lives, with adoring children sitting on my lap, hugging me and kissing me? It really sounded good. But recalling some of his earlier articles, I began to wonder if things are all so rosy up there in his little paradise in the Lone Star State after all. Apparently Pain has been fired from at least six jobs. On four of them, he says he was fired for "performing too well". I'll bet. I haven't known any employers who ever fired anyone because he was performing too well. They fire for various reasons: absenteeism, habitual tardiness, poor work habits, inefficiency, insubordination, disruptive behavior, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc. I've never had an employer tell me, "Keyes, I'm going to have to let you go because you're putting out too much work." I've had them say, "Keyes, if you weren't putting out so much work, I'd fire you, because you're a pain in the neck." But I guess Pain's soul path is a little different from mine. He says, "I have been fired from four different jobs for performing too well. I have been fired from another to cover my manager's mistakes. Recently I was fired because someone had to be and I seemed most capable of handling the adversity. I could continue for several more paragraphs listing the undeserved injustices that have been handed me." I wonder if those undeserved injustices include further dismissals. We're up to six as it is. One can picture Pain's little daughter asking, "Why is Daddy coming home so early again? Did he get canned again? Why do they keep firing him? Is he that good at his job?" Also, the picture of a warm, affectionate home life based on a loving father's sound career and years-long loyalty to his wife and children is sullied a bit when we read another excerpt from an earlier article of his. Pain says, "A couple of years ago, during my wilder days between marriages, I often invited the local bar home after a night of drinking." Again one can imagine Pain's daughter asking, "Daddy, who are all those men with red faces who keep talking about the race track? Why do they smell like alcohol and why do they talk so funny?" Of course, it's always possible that those excerpts from his articles were just lies that he invented on the spur of the moment in order to refute another contributor's article.
