Boycott Bill O'Reilly, Fox News

By Mark Gelbart
Jan. 16, 2007

Bill O'Reilly has made many stupid, ignorant, and insensitive statements in his career as a tabloid/political pundit, but now he's gone too far and it is time to pressure Fox News and force this sick jerk off the air. A few weeks ago O'Reilly blamed the victim of child abduction and abuse. He claimed Shawn Hornbeck enjoyed his two year experience as sex slave to Michael Devlin. O'Reilly believes Shawn liked not having to go to school because he passed up opportunities to escape from his captor. Shawn left clues on his parents' website, hoping someone would figure it out and save him. O''Reilly even called this taunting. O'Reilly had an expert child psychologist on his show explaining how kids can be brainwashed, but he said, "I'm not buying it."

In college I made an A in Child Psychology. I have nearly twelve years of direct experience raising a child and have a good memory and can recall my childhood vividly. Brainwashing children is a cinch. Devlin threatened to kill Shawn's parents, if he tried to escape. He was a big man, bold (at least when it came to dominating children), and imposing. I'm sure Shawn believed him and was simply trying to survive and protect his parents. O'Reilly's absurd opinion that a child victim enjoyed a situation of sexual servitude is intolerable. The failure of Fox News to cancel his show is revolting and unnacceptable.

O'Reilly isn't getting away scott free. He was scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, but after numerous complaints his appearance was cancelled, and he was replaced by John Walsh. (Walsh was second choice?) O'Reilly's ratings are also in decline. He's down 13% while the much more erudite Keith Oberman on MSNBC is up 21%. Fox News' ratings in general are declining. In one six month period last year they fell 58%.

Perhaps most Americans are finally beginning to recognize that Fox News is nothing but propaganda. Some conservatives deny it, but than again conservatives are usually blubbering ignoramuses. Daily memoes sent down to newsroom personnel telling them which stories to emphasize, which ones to look for, and how to word their stories prove the right wing bias of Fox News. The documentary, Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism, revealed the existence of these memoes. Media Matters analyzed over thirty of them, and they are blatant--not something a person could debate and remain credible. Here's a couple links about these memoes. here and here

Join me in boycotting Bill O'Reilly and Fox News, even if you're a conservative. No one can possibly defend O'Reilly's abusive demogoguery directed at the victim of abduction and pedophilia.
