Feb. 11, 2007 Along with health, the best thing in the world is money. One can live without faith, but not without money. Some may argue that if you have the right kind of faith, the money that you need will be forthcoming. I am not so sure that it works that way, but I do know that if you already have the money, you'll probably be enjoying life too much to worry about faith. That's the kind of situation I want to be in. Leave faith for the blind, the poor, the crazy, the imprisoned and the bereaved. Give me the cash. One can live without hope too, but not without money. In fact, hope is the desire for deliverance from unpleasant straits, and nothing provides better deliverance than a big stack of banknotes. Once you have the lucre, you no longer need hope. Everything that you hoped for has been bought. Were you cold? Money has bought you a coat. Were you hungry? Money has bought you your food. Were you ill? Money has bought you a doctor. If you cannot do it with money, it cannot be done. Love is fine too, but what really makes a household run is money. Your family's being housed and fed and clothed is far more important than professions of love. What if you and your family were out on the streets and you could no longer provide? Don't you think they would resent your inability to provide and start drifting gradually away? But with a good, sound bank account, you can surmount all the little differences that arise. Far better it is to have more money and less love, than more love and less money. There is no scripture or catechism in all the wide world that is as lovely as a healthy bankbook. Once you have a handful of dollars, you can find many, many ways to express your faith, hope and love. Nothing betokens love as much as gifts of clothing and food, payment of rent and transport, insurance and tuition. But to have a heart full of love and empty hands will do neither you nor anyone else any good. Those who were your friends will disappear and there will be no others to take their place. Your family will vanish. Wherever I go, people honor money above all things. No one asks, "Are you a Christian?" No one asks, "Are you a Muslim?" No one asks, "Are you a Buddhist?" No one asks, "Are you Jewish?" They all ask, "Do you have the money?" They may talk about religion, but what they're really waiting for is money. I can understand that perfectly well. Nothing in the world is so beautiful as to be in fine fettle, on a beautiful summer morning, with a bunch of money in your pocket. You are then the master of all you survey. All that you have faith in is before you. All that you hope for is there. All that you love you have. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
