Feb. 11, 2007 Someone wrote of all the many tragic occurrences that took place on February 8th and how those tragic occurrences should have taken precedence over the death of Anna Nicole Smith. At least that was implied in the article and of course, as a person of conscience I would have to agree. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the sensational and the prurient often take precedence over the every day tragedies occurring in our midst. We can shoulder some of the blame for the media hype surrounding Ms. Smith's death because we worship at the alter of celebrity and we crave this constant non-stop recitation of all the gory details. I have had many mixed emotions about what I have observed since last Thursday when Anna Nicole died and my sense of justice and fairness has been tested. I have heard reporters (some who are also lawyers), estranged family members, people claiming to be Anna's closest friends, disgruntled former employees and others who are apparently and obviously seeking their own fifteen minutes of fame crawling out of the woodwork to make statements regarding Ms. Smith and her companion Howard K. Stern. I have heard Mr. Stern accused of everything from being an enabler to a murderer. What I have NOT heard or seen is any evidence to back up any of the claims now being made. Some people say that Howard K. Stern followed the orders of Anna Nicole and did whatever she asked of him. Some people claim that she was under his svengali-like spell and that he drugged her and her son which resulted in both of their deaths. I have heard her own mother who she has been estranged from for fifteen years calling Howard K. Stern a murderer and claiming that she knew that Anna was in danger as a result of her relationship with Stern. While admitting in one breath that Anna would not take her phone calls and that she hadn't seen her daughter for many years, in another breath she is claiming to be sure that Howard K. Stern drugged her daughter and grandson. How would she know this if she had no contact with her daughter for almost the entire time that Anna and Howard knew each other and if she had never seen them interact with each other? How would she know that the rumors are true and that Howard gave her grandson drugs and then flushed them down a toilet in a hospital room? Most of what is being said about Anna and Howard's relationship is based on rumor and innuendo and on the word of people who felt alienated from Anna Nicole and the money machine that she was. If only THEY had been with Anna and Daniel rather than Howard...they would both be alive today........If only THEY had been in control and able to help Anna and keep her safe she would be alive today. To me this is both ridiculous and disingenuous. Some of these people had the opportunity to influence Anna long before Howard K. Stern came on the scene and yet she was hospitalized several times for apparent over-doses and drug related problems in the past. Why didn't they influence her behavior when they had the chance? I believe that Anna Nicole Smith was a substance abuser of grand proportions and that her fate was inevitable. If not Howard supplying her with the drugs then someone else would have...that is IF he did supply her with anything. I also believe that Anna would have secured those drugs no matter who was in her life and how many people were close to her. In my opinion, Anna Nicole Smith was a fatality waiting to happen and last Thursday merely happened to be the moment when fate caught up with her. Now on to the question of why we are fascinated and why the media is going crazy covering every single aspect of her life. Anna Nicole Smith was train-wreck material and people like to stop and gawk at train-wrecks. Her life and death had all of the earmarks of a grand soap opera and we know how popular those are. Anna had tragedy, money, sex and even an innocent baby in the mix of her life and on top of that she was a beautiful woman who appeared to have a death wish. She had mystery surrounding her and she was both a tragic figure and a Cinderella figure. She was a virtual Phoenix who rose from the ashes of her destroyed life on too many occasions to count. No matter how many times Anna was knocked down for the count she managed to rise up and overcome. She lost her battle in the Courts for her husband's millions and then the Supreme Court of the United States agreed to listen to her case. Against all odds they restored her hope and allowed her to go back to court to continue to pursue almost half a billion dollars. Anna managed to survive despite herself and she lived her dream if only on the surface. She was playing Russian Roulette and I think we all knew that. but for a long time the gun did not discharge any bullets and she lived to giggle and wiggle for another day. The results of the toxicology reports that the Broward County Coroner ordered will take a few weeks to once and for let all of us know what killed Anna Nicole Smith. The paternity of her baby daughter will eventually be solved and life will go on. Her mother, half sister and cousins and supposed best friends will continue to click their tongues and point the finger of blame at everyone but themselves and despicable people like Geraldo Rivera will shout angry curses in our faces about who and what was REALLY responsible for Anna's demise. It won't matter what the evidence is or if there is any evidence......righteous indignance sells and we haven't heard the last of the loud mouths like Geraldo no matter what the results of the autopsy are and what facts come forth. Anna Nicole fascinated us during her brief lifetime as did Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield (two women who she has been compared too these past few days) and she fascinates us in her death. She had it all...or so it would seem, yet she had nothing. Her beauty, money and fame could not prevent her untimely death and neither could anyone else...Anna Nicole ultimately was responsible for how she lived and how she died. She did not have to commit suicide to decide to die, she simply had to continue living as she lived. Geraldo will shout and the accusations will continue long after Anna turns to dust because her life mandated that we watch the train wreck until the last car is cleared out of the way and until another tragic story comes along to replace it. We will be hearing about Anna Nicole Smith for a long time to come because we need to reassure ourselves that we will NOT suffer the same fate. How could we........we are the WATCHERS and not the WATCHED.
