Enjoy Youth While It Lasts

By Jack Lepiarz
Feb. 8, 2007

Every day, in every class I take here at Emerson College, there's always at least one person who likes to act like an adult.

Now, that might be a strange thing to say, since I pride myself on maturity and the ability to take care of myself as an adult. What I mean by saying that they like to act like an adult is exactly what I said: they like to act like an adult. They talk like what they're saying is the greatest thing ever to be said. They're talking like they own the school. They're talking like they're thirty-five.

But here's the problem: none of these kids are actually adults. They're just kids that like to sound older by using big words with the occasional curse word thrown in for effect. They're just kids that dress up for class. In short, they're just kids. They're not big-time CEO's, or real-estate moguls, or famous actors. They're kids my age who seem to have forgotten what it means to be young.

I don't know about you, but that's just silly.

I love being young. I love having vitality. I love being rash and bold and exciting. I love living life to the fullest and living by my own rules. I love hating the man and "pretentious" people. I love hating the word, "pretentious." I love having the energy to run a mile down the street here in Boston, get back, and do a hundred push ups. I love the freedom of youth. Why anyone would knowingly choose to cage themselves from that is completely alien to me.

If anything, I don't want to get older, I want to get younger. Even on my 18th birthday, I wanted to stay at 17. For me, being 17 represented the highest pinnacle of youth--it was the point where I was as big as I could be without actually having the responsibility of adulthood. 18 years old brings a sort of expectation with it--that you're finally a man and you have to start acting like one. That's never been a problem for me, but it sort of indicates the end of the carefree, happy-go-lucky lifestyle that I love to lead.

Now, there are certainly good times to act like an adult. I try to take an adult approach in anything I do in my public life. I try to appear as mature as I can when I read the news for WERS, or when I write an article for Useless-Knowledge Magazine, or whenever I have to act like a professional. At the same time, there are so many reasons not to act like a thirty-five-year-old who's lost all of his emotions. When I perform I specifically try to channel youthful energy. Back when I still hosted the Katherine and Jack Show, I tried to appear as youthful as I could. People react so much better to someone with friendly, youthful energy.

So why a person would want to get rid of that and get rid of the carefree emotions that go along with it... I can't say. Life's too short to miss out on a childhood. I've tried to be an adult before and there's no reason to rush there. I say enjoy youth while it lasts.
