Feb. 8, 2007 The Scooter Libby trial is opening the ol’ kimonos for everyone to see the soft underbelly of politics in action. Do you recall how that whole sordid mess got started? In repeated debates with liberals on this site, they claimed that CIA agent Valerie Plame was not acting from partisan interests when she promoted her husband, Joseph Wilson, for a trip to Niger to investigate supposed uranium sales by that country to Iraq. Again and again, I was told that the trip was only undertaken due to a request by Dick Cheney, and that she did not offer her husband, his name came up after she was asked to suggest someone by her superiors. In 2004, a Senate investigating committee came to a different conclusion about the request from her superiors. They found that she had indeed instigated sending Wilson, suggesting very strongly that she had ulterior motives. Still, my opponents nagged on. Today, we learn that two documents have been admitted into evidence in the Libby trial that smash Plame’s other excuse as well. It now seems certain that the CIA was making plans for a Niger investigation before Cheney’s request. It also seems certain that Wilson was suggested for the trip before Cheney’s request. Amazingly My Opinion It seems obvious that the truth is going to show that the CIA, Plame, Wilson, Richard Armitage, Colin Powell, and other unnamed conspirators were acting, or intending by inaction, to attack the Bush administration. It seems obvious that they then undertook a cover-up campaign to disguise their disloyalty, and sat idly by as Libby’s career was ruined in a misdirected political witch-hunt that returned no indictments for any of the crimes for which it was impaneled, even though the perpetrators have admitted their acts. Since it is now apparent that those guilty parties were, in fact, opponents of the administration, and not the Bush supporters the witch-hunt wanted to snag, it’s all been quietly forgotten. Sadly, the truth will also show that the Bush administration responded in self-defense to those attacks. How? By trying to expose the truth. After Wilson’s article in the NYTimes – which is now proven to be intentionally distorted – the administration wanted to show that partisan politics were the real motive, and that is now obviously proven to be the case. Unfortunately, to understand the truth, it was necessary to know the connection between Wilson and Plame, and that meant revealing that Plame worked at the CIA. Such is the ugly world of politics, where snakes like Plame and Wilson can lay hidden in the grass and bite anyone they want, but no one can point out their presence without going to jail. Like many of the penalties called in professional sports, the referees see only the player responding to an attack and penalize him, instead of the player who instigated the scuffle. It looks like poor Scooter Libby is going to be the fall guy when he appears to be the only honorable one involved in the entire affair. It appears that he is only guilty of loyalty – he did as he was told, and fighting back against those cowardly liars Plame and Wilson could not have seemed wrong. Where are the charges against Armitage? He’s admitted doing exactly what the Special Prosecutor spent tens of millions of dollars trying to prove – revealing Plame’s status. What about indictments for obstruction of justice against Colin Powell and CIA Director Tenet, who knew Armitage was the guilty one, but said nothing all those years? More importantly, how do Plame and Wilson get their just punishment for orchestrating this entire affair, and lying about it? Why aren’t they indicted for perjury? Finally, what about all the other leaks of top secret information? Democrats get a Special Prosecutor fired up to find the person identifying the President’s attackers, but what about the other leaks of top secret information? Where is the witch-hunt to identify the person who leaked the information about the NSA surveillance strategy? Or, the person who revealed the secret prisons in Europe? Just as the Plame investigation evaporated once it came out that opponents of the President were guilty, those other investigations never happened because opponents of the President were guilty. To Democrats, only Republicans can be guilty of anything. The Democratic and liberal media hypocrisy is sickening.
