Give Me a Sign Here, Dear Creator

According to Christians, I have to accept Jesus Christ as my lord and savior in order to go to heaven, but according to Muslims, I have to believe in the Prophet Muhammad in order to go to heaven. This wouldn't be a problem if the two weren't mutually exclusive.

You see, my biggest beef with religion, God, and religious folk is that there's absolutely no reason to believe one religion over another. There is absolutely NO evidence that Christians are more right than Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Secularists, or any of the other hundreds of religions around the world. The problem is that, in the event that (I'll use Christianity as an example) Christianity is in fact the correct religion, two thirds of the human population is royally screwed. In fact, if Christianity is correct, then over four billion people are on their way to hell. Even if, say, you were a saint, you're still not going to heaven if you aren't Christian. The best you can hope for is purgatory (that is, of course, if Christianity is the correct faith).

But that's not my problem.

Let's speak hypothetically and say that there is a God in the sense of Christianity (I'm sticking with that idea since it's what I'm most familiar with). My problem is that there are so many religions around the world, most of which with their own ideas of heaven and hell, and we, as blind, inconsistent, and sinful human beings are supposed to just know that the Christian God is the one true God. Never mind the four billion other people who believe in a different religion. We're supposed to go by an ancient and often outdated text that tells us how to live our lives without any knowledge of the author or the actual date of publication. And, of course, if we don't follow this idea, we burn in hell for eternity.

Christ, that's just unfair.

I mean, I'm a fairly normal guy, but, you see, sometimes it's hard to believe something like that. I find it difficult to believe that the Bible is the one and true word for how I'm supposed to live my life. I find it very difficult to believe that there's one guy keeping track of everyone on the planet and making sure that they behave and believe in him. That's simple rationality in my mind.

But, you see, if I'm wrong, I'm going to hell. Plain and simple. But that's not something I can control. I can't just make myself believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. So, I need some kind of proof to show me that they're real. If God is all-knowing and all-powerful, he ought to be able to understand that having 21st century human beings live their lives by a second or third century text is asking a bit much. All I want is a sign from whatever God there is to tell me "Hey Jack, I'm real, you know to believe in me so that you won't spend the rest of eternity in damnation."

At that point, I'll say, "Thanks God, I really appreciate it, man. See you in church next Sunday!"

Until that happens, I'm going to continue to be an atheist.
