Feb. 7, 2007 Lisa Marie Nowak was arrested and charged with Attempted murder... Supposedly, Ms. Nowak was involved in a love-triangle and she drove 900 miles to seek out her rival who according to her attorney, "She only wanted to talk" with. The fact that she pepper sprayed this person and a knife, mallet, plastic bags, rope and other suspicious paraphernalia was found in a bag in Ms. Nowak's car shouldn't lead anyone to believe that Ms. Nowak had any ulterior motives regarding this so-called desired conversation according to her attorney. Ms. Nowak was an Astronaut. Of course not! Why would anyone believe that Ms. Nowak had anything else in mind other than a friendly chat considering that she wore diapers and carried a box of them in her automobile on that long trip? She obviously didn't want to have to stop along the way to use a bathroom or do anything else that would keep her from having that friendly chat in a timely manner. After all, Astronauts are on a mission and they have to accomplish it without interruptions, The fact that Ms. Shipman, the woman whom Ms. Nowak desired to converse with, was in the process of getting a TRO (Temporary Restraining Order), against Nowak and the fact that she cited "stalking" as the reason for the TRO shouldn't divert us from believing that Ms. Nowak had anything but good intentions in mind as she embarked her long, slightly damp trip. It's fairly apparent based on the statements of Ms. Nowak's friends that the woman had a complete break down and was no longer operating with a full deck. This highly decorated Naval Officer, college graduate and trusted final frontier explorer was not behaving as she normally did.....or was she? Anyone who seeks out the role of Astronaut is at the very least an adrenaline junkie. Someone seeking the ultimate adventure and taking the ultimate risks. Out of over 3500 applicants only 20 are chosen to go into space and represent the USA and NASA. They are asked to accomplish highly technical and important functions and they are put through rigorous training before they are allowed to be strapped into their seats aboard a space craft. My "friend" Nancy Grace, had one of her "experts" (the same one who seems to know about EVERYTHING that she covers on her shows), on yesterday and he stated that the Astronauts are subjected to constant and ongoing psych evaluations but he was inaccurate (surprise, surprise). When Ms. Grace interviewed a real Astronaut he stated that in the initial processing, potential Astronauts are evaluated psychologically but it is NOT an ongoing process and once they are accepted into the program it would only be due to the vigilance of those around the potential nutcase to recognize signs of a psychological breakdown. No one saw those signs regarding Ms. Nowak. Not being inside of Ms. Nowak's head, I can't say what her real intentions were concerning her love rival. I can surmise that her attorney was a little off when he stated that she only wanted to "talk" to her perceived competition since I have had many conversations with various people throughout my life and never felt it necessary to carry knives, mallets, rope and pepper spray to make my point. I never found it necessary to visit someone that I desired to have a conversation with and then whipped out my mace and fired away in the direction of their face. I have never been arrested for carrying a bag of tools that would make a seasoned felon blush nor have I found it necessary to travel for long distances wearing diapers so that I would not waste one second having to take bathroom breaks. The Judge that Ms.Nowak appeared before felt that the charge against her was inappropriate and didn't rise to the level of attempted murder so he issued bail and she is now free. Hopefully, she is not planning on having that friendly conversation anytime soon and that the woman she desired to speak with is protecting herself. While that woman nurses the burns that she sustained as a result of being pepper sprayed, I sincerely hope that she has security at her disposal. Somehow, throughout my life I never pictured those brave Astronauts that I watched blasting off into space as knife wielding, pepper spraying maniacs. I hope that Ms. Nowak (as troubled as she apparently is), has not given a bad name to people who are still considered heroes by many people. I hope that she gets the help that she needs and that NASA doesn't just suspend her for 30 days (as they did yesterday), but FOREVER. I just wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that flying high above me was a woman who was capable of doing what this woman did without anyone realizing that she was about to totally crack up. Maybe NASA should re-evaluate their training methods and requirements for Astronauts? Maybe ongoing psych tests would be appropriate? I know that I would feel better if they could be somewhat certain that the people on those missions weren't capable of utter mayhem. Now if they were attacked by Klingons and turned into raving lunatics I could understand that...after all, I've seen that and I know in my heart that the good Captain will make things better and save the world. What worries me is that the person writing the scripts for the real Astronauts has no clue as to whether or not they will freak out and turn into mutant killers.
