Feb. 5, 2007 Man is caught on a treadmill .Increased production has resulted in a glut of foodstuffs which, due to economic considerations, the food producing companies must move or face bankruptcy. Advertising is directed at the consumer in order to make him comsume. The ads not only are very cleverly done but so are the programs that support these adds. Comedy shows invariably revolve around fit looking individuals eating, drinking buying groceries or just talking about food most of the time. Movies are another excuse to pig out, the act of going to one now incomplete without the accompanying food and drink. There now seems to be no four or six hour break between meals. As soon as a slight hunger pang arrives there is always some way to assuage it by a short walk to corner store, the hot dog stand or the food court. There is too much food available for the average human being to resist. Man in conditioned by evolution to consume whenever he has a chance as he has for millions of years been at risk of starving to death. With progress has come unlimited food, a situation which so far the human race has unable to adapt to. However there are exceptions. There have always been the rich who have evolved over the millennia in such a way as to not consume everything in sight. Throughout the history of civilization there has proven to be two types of individuals, the heads and the backs. They can not be interchanged as the former would be dead within a week of over work and the latter from either eating or drinking himself to death. One of the greatest threats to health is now funnily enough food. When I was young we were constantly bombard with dire warnings of the coming starvation due to the population explosion .We were warned that the finite resource of the earth are not enough to support more than a certain level of population .Now that the opposite has been proven to be true you must excuse me if I take the dooms day cultists with a grain of salt.
With the death of religion and the end of any type of
idealism beyond feeding the body society has succumbed
to another illness, gluttony. Science has supposedly
proven that god does not exist and that the sole
purpose of life is to survive, (for what?) Humans are
the only species that know of there own impending
death. The development of the power of reason has
allowed us to reach this level of wealth. However it
has been accompanied by religious belief so to off set
the negative state of mind that would occur if one was
constantly aware of the fact that soon it would all be
over and there would soon be no awarness by the
individual :ever.Civilizations, rather than sink into
a state of hopeless apathy developed a set of beliefs
guarantying the individual continued awareness even
after death. Take away this and you take away the
collective will to reason .Come to think of it this is
about where society is any way. Is society giving up
the ability to reason in order to avoid facing the
void?
