Another Cross Bites The Dust?

By Michael John McCrae
Feb. 4, 2007

It is important that liberalism, in conjunction with atheism and socialist societal engineering, remove all vestiges of Christianity from any perceived public arena. The trend of the nominally religious is to embrace the thought that all religions should be catered to while at the same time finding ways to appease the irreligious.

After reading the AP article: “Removal of Cross From Virginia College Chapel Causes Stir Among Students, Alumni, Saturday , February 03, 2007, it becomes very apparent that religion is complicated, confusing and completely worthless in a setting of public educational diversity. Traditions become meaningless and the symbols of those traditions might as well be crated and left in a basement or an attic somewhere.

The article began: “A Catholic, Vince Haley often went to Mass at the College of William and Mary's historic chapel as an undergraduate in the 1980s…Also a Catholic, school President Gene R. Nichol often slips into the 120-seat chapel alone at night to think in the quiet…Both men agree the chapel is a sacred space meaningful to students, alumni, faculty and staff who use it for secular school events — starting with freshman orientation programs — as well as weddings and religious services. They clash, though, over what to do with an unadorned, 18-inch brass cross that had been displayed on the altar since about 1940.”

So both these men agree that the chapel of William and Mary is a “sacred place” that is “meaningful” Yet one of these men decided that the “sacred” part of the “meaning” should be removed because he now ascribes to the liberal dogma that religious diversity is somehow a good thing.

Quoting from the article: “Nichol unexpectedly created a ruckus in October when he ordered the cross removed to make the chapel more welcoming to students of all faiths. Previously, the cross could be removed by request; now it can be returned by request. “It's the right thing to do to make sure that this campus is open and welcoming to everyone," Nichol said in an interview. "This is a diverse institution religiously, and we want it to become even more diverse."

The other man has taken exception to that view and has created a petition drive on line to have the cross restored to the chapel. He is quoted: "The message that is sent by removing the cross is that we no longer value that part of our heritage, and that's a mistake," said Haley, research director at the American Enterprise Institute for former House speaker Newt Gingrich. "It reflects a view that religious symbols — religion and the public expression thereof — are somehow an obstacle for us to get along with one another."

You are free to read the rest of the article for yourself, and you are free to track down a synopsis of the incident here.

The empty cross, no matter where it is displayed has meaning only to those who understand the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. Even Satanists understand the real effect of the resurrection of Christ and mar this by displaying the cross upside-down. The irreligious do not care of meanings. The irreligious desire no outward displays or symbols to distract them from their need to remain in the darkness and ignorance of sin.

It is Christianity that is the all inclusive faith. Abraham was blessed by God long before the ACLU threatened its first lawsuit. God told Abraham that every nation would discover the truth of his personal faith and trust in the True God and that they would become blessed by that knowledge with their own faith. Did this make men of faith exclusive of men without faith? Yes, it did. The men of faith were blessed with everlasting life and relationship with the Godhead through the resurrected savior. Men who did not believe or ascribe to the resurrection remained lost in their religiosity or their unbelief.

The world’s religions were then as they are now, very jealous of those who accepted the eyewitness accounts of the men who followed the “God with us” known as Jesus. No other religion of the world could tolerate men like Peter, Paul, Luther, Tyndale, Spurgeon, Moody, or Dr. Sherman Milligan. They were men who knew God and his Son better than most other men. These were men who could change lives with their testimony of a God of love that embraces all who embrace his Son through faith. These were men also rejected by the greater part of humanity because religion got in the way of faith.

In the realm of the unfaithful it is necessary to remove all crosses from the public eye. Conflict must be curtailed. Of course the unfaithful cannot explain why they are so annoyed at the faithful. They make up stories about the “evil” of Christianity and how they choose not to be affiliated with evil. Then they turn to affiliate with atheists or communists or socialist liberals or even the religious of cultic religions and their collective agendas based in sin.

Too, the unfaithful hate that word sin. It reminds them of who they are.

Jesus did not come to start a religion. He came to draw all men to his Father through faith. He was crucified. He died. He was buried. He arose from the dead and for 40 days thereafter spoke comforting words of salvation and grace to a core of witnesses that were able to spread his testimony through the ages to this present century.

The unfaithful don’t like that either.

So another institute of higher learning, originally founded in Christian grace and upon Christian principle, falls to diversity and religious pluralism, causing the one great symbol of faith, pointing to life everlasting, to be relegated to the yard sale. How sad.

The president of this institute wants “more diversity”. From that will, no doubt, be bred more controversy. Religion will do that as faith has done that. Jesus said he did not come to bring peace, but a sword. The divisiveness will continue and the faithful will remain exclusive from the unfaithful; sheep and goats. Only Jesus will know the difference.
