Mr. Stelly What’s Your Problem

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 4, 2007

I thought I had been very complimentary in my previous article praising Mr. Stelly’s writing skills and here you go again misrepresenting what I’ve said. The quality of Mr. Stelly’s latest article certainly wasn’t up to the standards we know he’s capable of writing.

I once wrote an article of a suggestion for taking some of the African American youths who wind up in prison off the streets and forming a new style Peace Corp much like JFK did with young white men and women in the 60’s. I thought they could interface with Africans on a more personal basis and afford them a new environment at the same time. All expenses would be paid and they would earn at least the minimum American wage.

For my suggestion I was called a racist even though I was following a program that worked wonders for JFK. I was astounded at Mr. Stelly’s attitude until I reasoned he was a true Liberal and would rather see his African American brothers in prison at a cost to the tax paying public than fall victim to some conservative contrived plan to enhance their situation. Offering opportunities to become productive citizens and do some good for their ancestral homes at the same time. Kennedy called it giving back, Stelly called it Racism.

Yes Mr. Stelly there is a “Poor Black Me” persona infecting a minority of the black minority in this country. Most blacks have moved on some just can’t give up the slave mentality. A Half century ago Blacks sat in the back of the bus today they drive the buses and manage the bus companies. Today there’s a serious Black Candidate for president of the United States, 60 years ago that would be akin to man landing on the moon.

The majority of the black community has moved into the mainstream of American society. Those who chose to stay behind have every opportunity to advance like their more affluent brothers and sisters. They simply don’t have the ambition or the energy to acquirer the skills and education necessary to prosper and that’s a fact Mr. Stelly it’s not racism.

Dr. William [Bill] Cosby said it best when he said 85% of the larger cities population is African American, how can we blame the white man for our failures. For his stand he’s considered a pariah in the African American community. I say get over being black and get with joining the mainstream. We’ve heard enough whining already.

Mr. Stelly’s sophomoric rebuttal doesn’t alter the fact he has a talent for writing though at times misused. I’ve come to realize Mr. Stelly views himself as the poor mans orator and like all novas orators he resents being challenged. My Stelly lives in a world according to Timothy Stelly let no man challenge his opinions lest they be drawn and quartered.

What Mr. Stelly doesn’t seem to understand is the readers have made up their minds about him and me our rants aren’t going to change any minds. The original suggestion for Mr. Stelly was to stay with this web site and do his best to improve Useless Knowledge not drive it further into the muck of tabloid journalism.

There was a time when Mr. Stelly and I were on better terms at one point he was considering abandoning his liberal views. I spoke to the Reverend Keith Butler an African American Republican U S Senatorial candidate Dr. Butler willingly agreed if Mr. Stelly would contact him he would steer him in the right direction in his community and offer recommendations. Mr. Stelly chose not to follow up and that seemed to have ended any pleasant conversations between us.

I’ve said many times Mr. Stelly is possessed with a great deal of talent though in my opinion much of it is misdirected. When he’s good he’s very good when he bad he stinks, [but don’t we all.]

I would appreciate when he writes about me he does so with more accuracy and not so much of his misguided opinion injected. I have a better idea he should write about things that are important. I think many of us would rather read his views on more important issues than dising a poor uneducated county boy like me.

I would like to suggest a contest not for columnist of the year but for the type of article readers want to have posted on UK. Rather than deciding who is best it could be decided what is best. In my opinion that would draw some very interesting comments.
