Goodbye Mr. Stelly, (Maybe...)

By Ken Hughes
Feb. 2, 2007

If Mr. Stelly actually leaves he’ll be missed he’s an informed skilled writer who believes in what he writes.

Mr. Stelly says I tucked my tail between my legs and slithered off, isn’t that what Mr. Stelly is doing? He appears to be trying to make his departure a noble gesture while criticizing others as cowards for not staying and taking the abuse.

I’ve watched the demise in the quality of the articles on Useless Knowledge for the past year, [content not grammar and spelling] the truly gifted writers are falling by the wayside primarily due to lack of editing. I’ve been a contributor and still am to a number of web sites some are still active and some have gone by the wayside. The ones who are no longer with us are those who didn’t control the hostility of the writers. If the editors of UK are deluding themselves into thinking there isn’t a problem they’re wrong.

I’ve appreciated most of Mr. Stelly’s work until he gets into his “Poor Black Me Mode” then he begins to irritate me. We see Mr. Stelly’s racist remarks in his article today “White Dudes and Evangelical Republicans” he also mentions right-wing malcontents as though all conservatives and malcontent and only liberals are contented. That’s a rather wide swath to cut in my opinion.

Mr. Stelly and his ilk believe if you’re not a liberal you have no rights to free speech. He believes only blacks have a right to discuss African American issues. Mr. Stelly doesn’t seem to understand the principles of a democracy where open debate is encouraged. He also doesn’t seem to acknowledge it was white men and women who made civil rights a reality.

I would like to point out to Mr. Stelly Ken Hughes wasn’t run off when I left UK. I wrote articles explaining precisely what Mr. Stelly is saying in his latest article. My sentiments are in the archives they won’t be hard to find. I’ve recently returned to UK by the invitation of several contributors and one of the editors. You see Mr. Stelly if the ship is sinking I’d like to be there to help plug the holes or go down with it giving it my best efforts.

Mr. Stelly your criticism is somewhat hollow, you claim your leaving because some of the contributors are to critical of others yet your article is four printed pages of criticism much of it directed at me and I have been absent for nearly a year. I can only surmise some old wounds never heal. I think your racism is showing Mr. Stelly.

For anyone who’s interested why Mr. Stelly has a bias against me I’ll tell you. I grew up in a village in Central America where blacks were predominant. I was one of the few white teenagers in the village. I always felt more like a native than an expatriate American. When I came back to America I found the bigotry appalling. During the late 50’s 60’s and the 70’s I worked for interrogation of the African Americans. In later years I saw Dr, Kings Dream go up in smoke as the black hucksters took charge of the civil rights movement. Today if any Blacks doesn’t have a piece of the pie its there own fault. They’ve been force fed advantage after advantage by the government for 40 years. This country has spent more on supplementing ethnic living conditions than it’s spent on education.

Because I question the lack of effort made by a small minority of the African American community Mr. Stelly and others call me a racist. And because I see Mr. Stelly and others black contributors to UK continually milking the system I call them racists, it seems to be a stand off although I have the advantage of asking when will they become un-hyphenated Americans?

That my friends is where it stands, Mr. Stelly can’t get enough of denigrating me. On the other hand I have no quarrel with Mr. Stelly I’m sure he’s a fine but misguided person. Personally I hope he has what it takes to stay and try to bring UK back to what it once was a place for everyone to express their opinions [sans] ridiculing others regardless of talent and skills. Perhaps the editors will take note of the quality contributors who are leaving and make some changes.
