Regime Change in Tehran is Key to Peace in Baghdad

By Craig Chamberlain
Feb. 1, 2007

The battle for Iraq can be won, but only by confronting Iran. The battle for Iraq is only one part of the war against Islamic terrorists. The war is not just against individual terrorist groups, but against the states that sponsor terrorism. Removing terrorist supporting regimes is why we went into Afghanistan in 2001 and why we went into Iraq in 2003.

There is absolutely no question that Iran sponsors terrorism, it has been doing so since its revolution in 1979. It uses Hizbollah to wage war against Israel, to attempt a takeover of Lebanon, and kill Americans. Iran is also fighting us in Iraq. They are funding Shiite death squads, Muqtada Al-Sadr and his attempt to turn Iraq into a Shiite theocracy.

That's what it boils down to in this clash of civilizations. Iran seeks to turn back the clock, we seek to turn it forward. Iran wants to create a 7th century theocracy across the middle east and make themselves and Islamic superpower with the purpose of spreading their version of sharia law. It sounds crazy to us but that is their goal, and if the west doesn't begin to take that threat seriously it could happen. After all, in this country, now that the going has gotten tough, we want out.(apparently if a war lasts longer than a "Friends" rerun we want nothing to do with it.)

But back to Iran. Their aforementioned crimes are serious enough on their own to warrant action. They send Revolutionary Guardsmen into Iraq to attack our soldiers. The simple truth of the matter is this: Iran has been fighting the U.S. since 1979, the events in Iraq are not a change in strategy for them. But we've never taken the Iranian threat seriously, every administration that has had to deal with the mullahs has essentially ignored them. They have believed that Iran would never do what they say they would do, or they believe that they can sit down with these lunatics and hammer out some kind of agreement that is beneficial to both sides. If Iran wants our attention, I think we should give it to them.

It is in our nations interests to have a free and democratic middle east, and an Iran that no longer supports and funds terror. In order for us to look after our strategic interests we must confront obstales to them. (But it goes further than interests. It goes to basic rights for people. Democracy might take a while to take root, but it is the most stable, and just, form of government. The millions of people suffering under the reign of the mullahs have the right to their freedom.)

Iran is the linchpin to middle eastern terrorism. It provides ideology to terrorist groups, but far more importantly it provides money, weapons, and a safe haven. If this is ended, if there is regime change in Iran, terrorists will lack a safe haven, they will lack a training ground, they will lack the money they need to carry on their jihad. Islamists will not vanish, after all they make up about 10% of the Muslim world, but without patron states to fund and help them they will lose their power to the other 90%. Islamists may not vanish, but Islamism as a political force will.

Perhaps our President is beginning to see the light. Though, in the past, he has stated that a nuclear Iran in unacceptable he has always left it to the state department, or the UN to negotiate, or to levy sanctions, or bribe them into a peaceful negotiation. Now he has ordered another aircraft carrier to the gulf, he has appointed an Admiral to command in the middle east, possibly in case of a conflict with Iran.

Iran, we know, is guilty of funding terrorist groups in Iraq. These terrorists groups kill our soldiers, now it seems that they are sending revolutionary guard units into Iraq to cut out the middle man and kill our soldiers themselves. If this is the case it deserves a response from us. Anything would be better than to continue to ignore the fact that we are at war with Iran, whether we like it or not.

It is a paradox, but perhaps the only way to bring peace to Iraq is not sweep, clear, and hold, it's not even a political solution. It might lie in expanding the war. Attacking the nations that enable the violence and terrorism, and take away their ability to enable it. Cut the violence off at it's source. We ignore the threat from Iran at our own peril.
