![]() By Bonijean Isaacs Dec. 23, 2007 ;">The lady tells the story that her daughter went to Dollar General and came home upset. When the daughter was checking out she told the cashier "MERRY CHRISTMAS" and the cashier whispered.” I can't say that here. “Store rule” then she said "HAPPY HOLIDAYS". She encountered the same scenario at Wal-Mart. By the time she got home she was vowing to boycott the stores. WHAT A BUNCH OF NONSENSE! Retailers are interested in pleasing the customer. If a customer greeted me with a MERRY CHRISTMAS that is a good cue that the customer would not be offended by return greeting of “Merry Christmas.” I would be in trouble with my employer if I returned a customer’s greeting of “MERRY CHRISTMAS” with quietly whispering, “I am not allowed to say that. Store Rule so….. HAPPY HOLIDAY.” They would prefer that I simply return the “Merry
Christmas” greeting and the happy customer’s money goes into the cash register. Most customers are more interested in discussions on finding the perfect 17 pound turkey or the prettiest pineapple stalks versus the Store Policies. It has been my experience that some Christians are more offended by being told, "HAPPY HOLIDAY" than non-Christians are offended by being told "MERRY CHRISTMAS" Nevertheless I take the cue from the Customer. If a Man comes in the store donning a
long beard and yarmulke asking for Matzo Bread to make stuffing for his turkey, I’ll tell him "HAPPY HANUKKAH!" If the customer is a woman wearing a veil over her face and looking for exotic eye shadow, I may also tell her where to find a sexy corset to wear under her robes - I would wish her a HAPPY HOLIDAY. If a group of scantily clad bikers with “We Love Richard Darkin!” Patches come in the store looking for Oysters. I would discreetly check out their tattoos, smile and simply tell them, "THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING AT WAL-MART!!!" What is so bad about commercialism with the Holidays? Winter is cold and dismal all by itself. Imagine winter with Shopping Malls with no decorations and no Santa. There would be no Salvation Army Bell Ringers – No Churches organizing Holiday Feasts for the poor and homeless. There would be no gifts. There would be no Holiday Cards from Friends and Relatives that we hear from once a year. Granted there are some folks who spend money they don’t have for things they don’t want to people they don’t like. There are Dollar Stores, Wal-Marts and Neiman Marcus that will fit everyone’s financial realities. Retail Therapy is good for the economy and there is always midnight mass afterwards.
So………………… I grant you all my favorite politically incorrect version of HAPPY X-MAS and A MERRY HOLYDay AND Thank You for Shopping at Wal-Mart to ALL!!!!!
