Dec. 23, 2007 With apologies to Ann Coulter, the title of this article explains a lot about how I feel about American Democrats. There's very good reason for that opinion, too. I had a good friend who, upon retirement, took his wife on a cook's tour of Europe. While in Spain, his tour group stopped at a roadside fruitstand for some refreshing juice and a chance to stretch their legs. Being a rancher, my friend was intrigued by a vast field of waist-high, lush grass across the highway from the fruit stand. The tour guide walked up to him and asked what so interested him about that field. My friend said that he was just thinking about how many cattle he could graze on such a wonderfully fertile pasture. The guide said, "Probably about 4000. That's how many my family ran there when we owned it." "Why don't you still own it," asked my friend? "Some years ago, the Communist Party came to power in Spain and undertook to seize lands that had been in some families for hundreds of years and, in theory, was to give the land to the peons who lived on and worked the land. In fact, most such lands were given to Party faithful as a reward for their support--most going to those who engineered the establishment of a communist government. Our particular property was taken and now belongs to a former legislator who was a staunch communist leader. He ignores it, for the most part, and lives in Madrid. After he received the gift of our land, he ran the peons out of their homes--which my family had provided for them free of charge for decades--but he never again even visited the place. The ground has lain fallow ever since, but could graze thousands of cattle or sheep." "Amazing," replied my friend. "I'm sorry for your family's loss. Fortunately, no such thing would be possible in America where we really don't have a viable Communist Party." "Not so," said the guide. "Everyone in Europe knows that communists are VERY powerful in the United States. You just CALL them Democrats! After all, they believe in the same things: Collectivist, one-size-fits-all "solutions" to problems--dictated, of course, from those in power in the capital; mandating behavioral changes via the tax code by punishing with higher taxes, behaviors that are out of favor and rewarding with tax breaks, behaviors that the Party approves of; confiscatory tax policy that seizes more and more of the national GNP to solidify the government's grasp on control of the people; and growing the bureaucracy to the point where it becomes the largest, single employer in the country--supported on the backs of the poor and middle classes. What DOES amaze us, is why America's communists are so cowardly that they hide behind euphamisms like democracy and democratic instead of telling the people who and what they really are. At least Spanish communists had the cajones to admit it. America's simply don't." ------------ About the author: David A.
