Is Iraq A Decoy

By Mike Haran
Dec. 16, 2007

Now that the main objective of the war in Afghanistan with the attacks in Helmand province, the center of opium production in Afghanistan, is becoming apparent, the suppression of the drugs industry, the reason for the war in Iraq is also becoming clear. It was not such a high priority target as was Afghanistan as the latter produced the income for the attacks on the west. If only Afghanistan were the target for western forces the liberal media would soon enough have made sure that the war was unpopular and by political means would have protected the drug lords.

War now is dependent upon public opinion to succeed. The disclosures regarding Irans work on the production a nuclear weapon where the NIE stated that Iran had ceased work on its nuclear weapons in 03 should be taken with a grain of salt as it is clear that the US has just about zero capability of telling what is going on any where due to the fact that she relies upon electronic surveillance to gather information which can easily be fooled.Intelligence agencies can be misled deliberately in a well orchestrated campaign tied in with the yearning of the western media to find its military and more importantly President Bush in the wrong.

All of this must have been taken into account when the war on terror become enlarged with the 9/11 attacks and more so with the ones on Bali Madrid and London. Planners in my view must now attempt to predict the possible future media reporting and plan their operations taking this into account. The face of warfare has now greatly changed as the generals now have to have the ability to counteract the media effect in much the same way as in the past generals had to mitigate against weather and other natural occurrences.

The operations in Afghanistan seem to be coming to a head with the final throttling of the enemy presence at the extreme northerly end of the province, a bottle neck leading into the Central Asian Republics and Iran. Without the operations in Iraq to consume them the media would be free to castigate the allied effort in order to turn public opinion against it.

This is not to suggest that the war in Iraq was merely a decoy as with Sadam still in power it would be an almost certainty that he would now be involved in Afghanistan and other places; protestations that he was unfriendly to Al Qaida in no way making any difference as the enemy of my enemy is usually my friend.

At this point in time it seems that the war is turning in favor of west in both the military sense and also on the propaganda front. The media now seem to be taking a softer approach to Bush. Why even Bob Woodward has been accused if being an unpaid spokesman for him by the more extreme media.
