SEC Refs, Media Cheat Georgia Bulldogs Out Of National Championship Game

By Mark Gelbart
Dec. 5, 2007

Tennessee hadn't been in a SEC championship game since 2001 and hadn't won one since 1999. SEC officials obviously wanted them in the conference championship game this year. The proof is in the way Tennessee games were officiated. The referees cheated like crazy for the vols in their home games, most notably in their "victory" over South Carolina. I'm a Georgia Bulldog fan and accordingly, I hate Steve Spurrier, but the way his team got jobbed this year in Knoxville made me feel sorry for him. The result effected the Dawgs as well. Instead of winning the SEC east out right, the Dawgs were forced to share the SEC east title with the ugly orange team and because of a tiebreaker, they didn't get to go to Atlanta. Tennessee went and gagged on a banged up LSU team that Georgia would've beaten by three touchdowns.

Georgia ranked fourth before the conference championship games last Saturday. The media honestly felt that Georgia, despite not making it into the SEC championship game, was the best team in the conference and better than an LSU team that's lost twice in its last six games. Georgia fans were excited Saturday night when the top two teams lost, paving the way for them to be in the national championship game. But all season long, the media's been in love with LSU, even after they kept losing. I knew, as soon as I heard the talking dirtheads on ESPN and ABC spew nonsense about how a team that didn't even win its conference title didn't belong in the national championship game, that Georgia was going to get jumped in the BCS standings.

They were jumped, not only by LSU, but by Virginia Tech (a team they thrashed last year in the Chick Filet Bowl), and Oklahoma (a team that gave up 49 to a mediocre Texas Tech team just a few weeks ago). Over the last six weeks of the season no other team in the nation came close to accomplishing what the Dawgs did: beating Vandy on the road at night, mauling Florida and breaking Tim Tebow in half, stomping Troy in a classic trap game, crushing Auburn (and lighting up the scoreboard against one of the nation's best defenses), whipping Kentucky (a task LSU failed), and dominating archrival Tech even though the flies laid some defense on them like Pitt did to West Virginia. Unlike the mountaineers, the Dawgs didn't choke. No other team in the nation could've gone through those games undefeated.

Some say Southern Cal is hotter than Georgia but they recently lost to Oregon and haven't really scored many points except against Arizona State's slow-footed, poor-tackling defense. Ironically, West Virginia's loss knocked Georgia out of the Rose Bowl and a chance to beat Southern Cal and prove who the real number one team in the nation is. Now, both the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl are horrendous mismatches: Southern Cal will murder Illinois, Georgia will rip Hawaii apart.

I will never forgive the media for anointing LSU into the championship game over Georgia. Kirk Herbstreit is a lying jerk. Lee Corso is a louse. Doug Flutie is a dunce. The entire ESPN crew belongs in a septic tank.
