A Tribute To Actor Bae Yong Joon

By Lin Lin
Aug. 27, 2007

A friend recently went to a movie premiere (She is not a star, but a fan, who tries to get a couple of valuable signatures.).
“It was crazy,” she told me. “People scream and shout to attract actors’ attention.”
“Did you get the signatures that you long for?” I asked.
“Of course,” proudly she displayed her trophy. “Why shouldn’t they? We, the people pay for their big salary. It is their job and duty to please us. Do you know how much a movie ticket costs nowadays and not to mention the over-priced soda and popcorn?” She went on and on, as usual she spoke her mind.

Like doctor, lawyer, college professor, actor is just another job, in my humble opinion. It might be a very well paid job, but the pressure and risk involved can be overwhelming at times. Jackie Chen, the famous Hong Kong action star has more than two hundred injuries from head to toe to prove it. God knows how many times he suffered broken nose, back, ribs, arms and legs. Jumping off a roof or a bus top without protection is routine for him. He wants to show the audiences some real action, not computer generated images. At the end of each movie, we see the credits rolling, and shots of him personally execute those dangerous stunts, even pictures of him lie on stretchers in pain. Being an action star is not as cool and easy as it seems.

Bae Yong Joon, a young and talented South Korean actor, who is very well known and loved in Asia, has played many memorable roles throughout his decade long career. Unlike Jackie Chen, he does little or no “action”. His presence on screen alone captivates the audiences. On his face, one easily captures the character’s innermost emotions and thoughts. Dialogue becomes necessary; his facial expression says it all. Most of his dramas and movies are none violent; focus on love, relationships, and harsh society issues. Through him we see how average people struggle to survive.
In real life, Joon is a gentle and caring man, a role model to many. Generous to the needy and always polite to his adoring fans, he even calls them his family (a very smart move, I must say). Whenever or wherever a natural disaster hits, he lends support, donates money to hospitals and helps to build libraries for underprivileged children in the remote countryside.

A public figure often shoulders more social responsibilities and burdens than an average person. They are not only expected to do a good job, career wise, also to influence the public in a positive way. So many stars lose their radiance, fallen and then perish. Sometimes, when they struggle, they receive little or no support, not even sympathy (They have too much money to burn, one might say). Maybe because we are not in their shoes to see and experience and understand the pain and hardship they suffer. Maybe they use to put up a fence to protect themselves and block unwanted attention. Maybe they just need some privacy to enjoy a normal life like you and me. No matter what’s the case, let us try to respect one and other. In the face of god everyone is created equal. Whether you are a star or merely a dust in the wind.

This article is a tribute to actor Bae Yong Joon for his 35th birthday, which is on August 29th.
