Thoughts For The Week

By Tracey Stevens
Aug. 24, 2007

Love of sports. With some professional athletes giving athletes a bad name recently, is Barry on steroids and Michael Vick with far too much free time and a complete lack of common sense. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for sports. No steroid allegations, you don’t have to worry about a player having a banner series knowing that he’s going to hold out next year for more money or worried that your favorite player is going to be caught in a hot tub snorting blow off of a hookers butt. Just people actually playing for a love of the game and a win. Anyone wondering what I’m talking about? The little league World Series. I’m not much of a baseball fan but it’s a joy to see these kids out playing.

Speaking of Michael Vick, how many people would love to seen an interview by Randy Jackson from American Idol? “What’s up dog? What were you doing with those dogs dog? As you’re guilty of dog fighting dog, you’re gonna go to the dog-house dog.” Well ok, it would be a bit stupid. Something like Jessica Simpson interviewing Paris Hilton.

Made in China . Those of you that follow the news are no doubt aware of all of the recalls over the last year of products made in China . It started with pet food, tainted with melamine an industrial chemical used to make plastic and fertilizer and most recently has been children’s toys, which were painted with a led based paint. Among the list of recalled items has been toothpaste with contained an antifreeze agent. I’m not a chemist but I don’t believe diethylene glycol is used for teeth whitening. Tires were recalled after it was discovered that the tread could become separated. I mentioned children toys which were painted with lead based paint but there also has been the “Cooky” children’s stationary set with came complete with pencil, markers, erasers and a razor blade. Who in their right mind includes a razor blade in a children’s toy set? What’s next from China ? The little hunters outfit complete with a skinning knife and high powered rifle. They also offered botched instructions with putting together a crib which could result in the crib collapsing, obviously figuring that the nursery song “rock a bye baby” was to be taken literally. We’ve been importing products from China for decades and up to this year there haven’t been too many complaints. Have these problems always been there and either never discovered or in an effort to make the almighty dollar just ignored? Then something was discovered and in an effort to avoid a lawsuit the blame game is now being played. If this is a recent occurrence of events then why suddenly now after decades of supposedly good imports.

Speaking of China, 16 of the worlds most polluted cities happen to be in China . This should make the Olympics, especially the long distance events, very interesting. Based on some pictures I’ve seen of the air quality there is the possibility that the javelin could possibly get stuck and heaven help any kayaker that actually falls in the river.

P a t i e n c e as in Lord please give me patience…right now. I’m normally a patient sort of guy with 3 exceptions. The first being cell phones. Very few things make me want to chew at the steering wheel worse then some idiot on a cell phone probably explaining to someone that they are being safe while driving and talking on the cell phone because they are traveling 15mph below the speed limit. GET OFF OF THE PHONE. City driving is even worse as I guess they are explaining to the other person that the light has just turned green and now they have to go but don’t worry, they’ll accelerate very sssllloooowwwwllllyyyy. GET OFF OF THE PHONE. Then of course curves are much more difficult when your turning with one hand because the other has been permanently attached to the….GET OFF OF THE PHONE. So to paraphrase, look here agent 86, when most of us are on the road we are heading some place that we would like to reach in a prompt manner, we do not take the above into account when planning the trip…So GET OFF OF THE PHONE. The second thing is fast food places. It’s a fast food place and the reason that they don’t pass out menus is the menu is exactly the same as it was when you were here last week. This is not Le (fill in blank here) and sea bass cooked in a truffle sauce with a white wine reduction has not suddenly appeared on the menu. It should not take 5 minutes for you to decide what to order at McDonalds or any other fast food place. The 3rd thing that really drives me nuts is grocery shopping. The express lanes are for 10 or 20 items or less, this does not refer to shopping carts. Another thing is coupons. If you want to save 3 cents on a 5 dollar box of cereal fine but get the coupons as you’re shopping. Once you’ve gone through line is NOT the time to search through a purse the size of a suit case for a coupon for 5 cents off a bag of cheetos. This of course brings me to the last thing is paying by check. The time to start filling out the check, I.E name of store, your name and date is when they are ringing up your purchase, then you simple fill out the amount. This is expedient. What is not expedient is waiting until everything is rung up and then rummaging in your purse, that hasn’t been cleaned out since the 50’s, for your check book. Usually when this happens the checking account is based on a bank in Vanuatu.

In California some stores are seeking a lawsuit for price fixing against some of the oil giants. Very interesting.
