Aug. 8, 2007 Have you ever lost your car keys? Sure you have as I think it’s quite probably a universal occurrence. I imagine the Henry Ford in addition to being credited with the invention of the automobile is also credited with being the first person to utter the phrase “honey, have you seen my car keys?” Well, losing is probably not a good word as you usually find them so misplaced would be a more descriptive word. Misplacing something usually doesn’t cause any harm although diapers sometimes seems to one of the exceptions. By the time you find the diapers you usually also find that the toddlers has opened the front door and is now standing nakkid providing amusement to the neighbors. Now I’m as bad as the next guy when it comes to losing/misplacing items. I have temporarily lost my car keys, my wallet, and my wedding ring among other numerous items. I once lost my car, others might call it forgetting where I parked but it amounts to the same thing, for 4 hours at the Penbrook mall in Virginia Beach . I’ve lost so many pairs of sunglasses that I get letters of concern when ever the sales of said items drop. It’s gotten so bad that my wife won’t send me to the store without a GPS. I once thought I’d lost a sandwich that I had carefully assembled. The sandwich in question hadn’t been lost as it had been acquired in a hostile takeover by the family dog. The dog, being a dog, hadn’t done proper research before acquiring the sandwich as I had put several slices of habanera pepper between slices of meat and cheese. This is how I discovered that I wasn’t losing my mind and imagined the sandwich after witnessing the effect of the pepper on the dogs G.I tract. The dog was doing his impression of a funny car at the track and one could almost see white smoke. Speaking of misplaced items, our reasoning for invading Iraq was given as weapons of mass destruction. We have been unable to locate said weapons and to add insult to injury it now appears that the pentagon has “misplaced” roughly 190,000 weapons given to Iraqi Security forces. This includes 110,000 AK-47’s and 80,000 pistols. For those of you not familiar with this brand of weapon then might I suggest renting “Heart Break Ridge”, and listen to the following line“it’s the preferred weapon of our enemies.”.” It seems that in our rush to get the Iraqi security forces armed and dangerous General Petraeus, the person in charge of security training, didn’t follow procedures and as a result roughly a whopping 30% of the weapons supplied are now AWOL. Now some people will claim that these things happen during the fog of war however it also means in all likely hood that some of our solders are being killed and wounded by weapons bought by U.S taxpayers. It also seems that other equipment “misplaced” is 215,000 pieces of body armor and 140,000 helmets. All of this took place between 2004 till today and if my memory serves this is roughly the same time is when complaint were coming from our own troops about lack of available body armor. We’ve all heard the saying “to give the shirt off of your back” in response to a favor. I suppose current U.S policy is to give someone the armor off of our solders back in order to supply a foreign force. We should first take care of our own troops with proper leadership and equipment before equipping what will soon be someone else’s army. It seems that our country has misplaced quite a few things over the past few years. We have misplaced family values and substituted expediency. Our corporations and business have misplaced loyalty and brought in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Our military leaders have misplaced oaths to one’s troops with doing what is necessary to further one’s career. One can replace car keys, wallets, purses, and the grass in the back yard. Our country needs to search under the seat cushions and find our common sense. ------------ About the author: Tracey Stevens is a longtime contributor of Useless-Knowledge.
