John McCain And His War Poses

By Nicholas Olson
Apr. 30, 2007

Thank you DailyKos and YouTube, you have outed a hypocrite! Senator, you are out of line. But you must have a faulty memory as most do on the subject so I'll elaborate.

During the crisis in Somalia, Sen. John McCain was a vocal critic of having American troops in the middle of the blood bath. On the senate floor in October of 1993, Sen. McCain struck a pose of an anti-war spokesman who chided Bill Clinton for his choice to intercede in the affairs of the warring nation. But, lo and behold, today Sen. McCain whistles a different tune for Iraq.

Today the fine senator from the state of Arizona is a proponent of the four-year skirmish that is bleeding our treasuring, killing our young men and women in uniform, and is destroying out international street cred. My, how times of changed.

But if you don't believe me, check out the video. C-Span is probably one of the more boring glimpses into our fine government but don't let that stop you from realizing that it is a useful tool to discredit the panderers and snake oil salesmen that we often elect and re-elect to office.

McCain, aside from being a partisan hack, is a symbol of what is wrong in our country when it comes to politics. When personality trumps what is right, what is correct, then we are all doomed. You see, we love to, as a collective, forgo the homework of keeping our government representatives in line and, instead, accept whatever comes out of the media as the truth of everything.

And that's why I love when critical thinkers take them to task. It is too bad that our major media outlets don't follow suit. When the Daily Show or the blogosphere have spent time debunking the cowards and crazies, the major news organizations give them passes, instead opting for the scandals and sleaze that we really crave. So, while we are busy fretting over Anna Nicole and Paris Hilton, the real news, you know, the difficult stuff, is swept aside in favor of ratings getters.

McCain is a product of the modern culture. He listens to too many people and does whatever he is told because he is afraid of being lost in the shuffle. So he primps and polishes and takes talking points from his party, cozies up to scum and takes donations from people who, in his youth, he wouldn't give the time of day to.

And yet there he is amongst the frontrunners of the Republican Party presidential candidates, chiding those who would never vote for him and pandering to those he already has in his pocket.

The problem is that he doesn't yet realize that there are those out here that wish nothing other than to discredit him. We record his public persona and make sure he does not stray from his "ideals."

The fact is that he is a snake oil salesman, much like most drawn to politics. And he changes courses often because, much like those wanting to retain their office, he will say whatever and do whatever it takes to be re-elected.

But he will get another pass and we will keep giving him money because we don't know better. We don't want to believe that we would be making a mistake like we did with the current administration. At least those few who still hold out hope are becoming less and less.

But McCain is like Diet Bush. He seems a lot more sane, far more articulate, and don't forget his status during Viet Nam. Nope, can't forget his 5 years as a prisoner of war.

What this type of behavior, those of his fellow candidates, is that they are willing to do whatever it takes. They lose their principles, forge allegiances for money and basically take us for a ride we shall not soon forget.

Meanwhile we should be doing a lot better. In a country bent on being seen as number one, we sure have lost a lot of ground. I would like to call our current state the "Great Transition." Where once any American could know how great it is to be an American, a good job, a family, a feeling of being part of the greater good, now can know that it is all in the past and any belief that it will return is living in fantasy world.

The Great Transition is not for the weak and definitely not the poor. The idea of the class system is becoming as much a two party system as our government. The middle class will need redefining as well as the poor. But that is all for another time. For now I must stick to my guns. McCain has chosen his battle and lost his wit. A damn shame for a once promising moderate candidate who could have been good for this divided country.

Peace.
