Apr. 26, 2007 I keep seeing articles online to the effect that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John Edwards has said that nothing is off the table in the confrontation between the US and Iran. They are particularly vociferous in their anti-Iranian pose when they are speaking before predominantly Jewish audiences, with whom they must curry favor, not only to attract lucrative contributions, like monkeys making money for their organ-grinders, but also to resplend more favorably in the limelight projected by the largely Jewish media moguls and thus win the hearts of the general public. This has been reported in several publications and websites; I don't know what the major media have to say. In their bias, the three candidates are following in George W. Bush's footsteps as faithfully as he trod in those of his predecessor, William F. Clinton. However, there seem to be a few things that are indeed off the table when they discuss Iran. One thing that seems to be off the table is a determination to compel Israel to join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. I don't know if I have ever read of a single significant American political figure who has denounced Israel as a nuclear proliferator. Any candidate who talked along such lines, like Ralph Nader or Patrick Buchanan, would get nowhere in an election, thanks to the avalanche of media smears that would befall him. As I see it, sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If Israel has a tacit carte blanche to proliferate, Iran has every justification for seeking nuclear weapons. It doesn't necessarily follow, if Israel should be required to dismantle its nuclear arsenal, that Iran would stop seeking arms. But it does follow that if Israel remains nuclear, Iran will keep on trying to emulate it. Also, one must ask, if he or she is honest, how much nuclear technology flowed from the US to Israel, overtly or covertly, over the years, and how greatly the US is complicit in the erection of Israel's arsenal. Not only were the US and the other four original nuclear powers supposed to disarm eventually, according to the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, but also they were forbidden to assist then-non-nuclear countries, like Israel, from arming. Actually, Iran is not a proliferator at all, so far. Iran has no nuclear weapons, and its uranium-enrichment program has not advanced to the level that would enable it to produce weapons-grade uranium. If the US is genuinely concerned with non-proliferation, it should concentrate first on confronting the countries that do have nuclear weapons: Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea. Why pick on, first, Iraq, and, then, on Iran? In the US, because of decades of propaganda and disinformation, it is taken as axiomatic that Jews are better than Muslims, Jews are better than Arabs and Jews are better than Persians. I don't buy it. The people who foster this kind of bigotry are among the first to claim that democratic motives are what are impelling the US to plot its military misadventures in the Middle East. Again and again I hear the rhetoric that the citizens of Islamic tyrannies are practically begging for deliverance in the form of US intervention. Four years ago Iraq was to be a "cakewalk" and Iraqis were to greet US troops with "flowers". Even discounting allegations that those flower-greetings were theatrical productions directed by the US in the first place, why is it that Iraqis keep resisting the US presence four years later? They see the US as synonymous with Israel, and Americans as synonymous with Jews. They believe, probably with justification, that the US is paving the way for Israeli expansion at their own expense. Americans may be gullible enough to believe that the US has spent $400 billion dollars to democratize Iraq, but Islamic leaders are not. They know precisely what is behind these preemptive strikes and interventionism. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
