A Surefire Way To Lose Weight

By Thomas Keyes
Apr. 17, 2007

Overweight? There's no need to undergo liposuction. You don't have to pay for physicians' consultations. You don't have to buy expensive pharmaceuticals or diet aids. You don't have to pay dues at reducing salons. You needn't buy any instruction manuals or calorie-counters. You don't even have to exercise, though, of course, exercise is salutary in its own right.

The surefire method consists simply of going on fasts. This is something I've done several times in my life when somehow my weight had begun to creep upwards undesirably. It works like a charm, it's quick and it's virtually painless. It's also free and even saves you a little money.

You simply decide to go on one or more fasts until you reach the desired weight. Just recently I went on a 10-day fast, eating nothing at all, but drinking a couple of soft drinks each day. My weight dropped from 175 pounds to 166 pounds. I was not overweight to begin with; I merely wanted to be even slimmer. I was hoping to lose 10 pounds in a 7-day fast, but it simply didn't happen. However, if you are fat, you lose weight much faster. If you weigh over 200, you may be able to shed 10, 15 or even 20 pounds in a week or so, depending on whether you are muscular or flabby. Years ago, when I was fat, I lost 22 pounds in a week. On that fast, I drank water and chewed gum for seven days.

If you don't achieve your goal in the first fast, you simply return to normal, eating somewhat less each day than you did before the fast, and after a week or so, you go on another fast. You keep repeating. If and when you have reached your goal, you maintain your weight in the same way. Have you gained 2 pounds? Lose it in a 2-day fast. Nip it in the bud instead of waiting till you are 10, 15 or 20 pounds overweight.

Another tack that I tried once was to eat every other day. I recall that I ate one Big Mac with fries every 2 days, and nothing else. Several times, I've been on a one-meal-a-day regimen. Once I ate one sandwich and drank one quart of milk per day for several months. These methods also work, but only discouragingly slowly.
I'm familiar with the routine of merely dieting according to some notion of caloric intake. Weeks and months go by, and you find you've lost only 2 pounds or 4 pounds. It doesn't seem worth the bother. But it's a boost when you see 10 pounds vanish in a few days.

If you like to eat pizza, tacos, ice cream and chocolate, go ahead. You don't have to count calories. But as soon as you pass the maximum weight you have set yourself, go on a fast. It could be 2, 3, 5 or 7 days. After about 24 hours, you don't get any hungrier. Your level of discomfort stays the same for the duration of the fast. You don't really suffer "pangs". In fact, most of the day, you're not even thinking about it. Now and then, you'll find yourself daydreaming about food, but don't yield. It's easy. Try it. You'll like it.
