Apr. 16, 2007 If we had not invaded Iraq, it is probable that power-crazy Saddam Hussein would eventually have used oil money from the world's third biggest petroleum reserve to buy long range missles from North Korea and Pakistan, along with nuclear warheads (or at least powdered nuclear waste). Sooner or later he would have fired those things, at Europe and possibly at America. Well, we killed him instead. (We were damned if we did and damned if we didn't, but we did.) Now I'm afraid that the Democrats here will pull us out of Iraq, just like they did from Viet Nam. But Iraq is different --- it has all that oil. If the Shiites quickly take over Iraq, they'll slaughter the Sunnis (just like Saddam had done to many Shiites originally). Then Iran will have all that oil money, and they probably will use it for the obtaining the above-mentioned enormous destructive power (instead of for education and food production, etc.). However, the Sunnis are still strong in Iraq, and there is a chance that, with massive help from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, etc., the Sunnis will fight the Shiites to the death, causing general chaos and mutual destruction. The oil wells and storage tanks are quite vulnerable, and once fires are started there, without help from our fire-fighters the whole area would become engulfed in permanent flames. If so, it will create history's greatest air pollution cloud, worse than in the Kuwait war. Do I hope for that? No, because it is just too awful. But facing the facts, it seems quite likely. ------------ About the author: Dan Shanefield is a retired engineering prof, who worked at Bell Labs and then at Rutgers University.
