 By Bonijean Isaacs Apr. 13, 2007 My grandmothers were magical Appalachian women. There are some considered my grandmothers eccentric. I inherited the traits of my grandmothers. I have been considered eccentric even by California standards. Nevertheless, I feel honored to follow the footsteps of my magical grannies. I woke up this morning and thought "Friday the Thirteenth!" HOO HAH! Thirteen is not a bad number. It’s a Good Number! Take the Baker’s Dozen. It’s history began in England. A baker who intentionally or otherwise shortchanged a customer would be subjected to dire legal consequences. Thus instead of Twelve loaves of bread, the customer got Thirteen loaves of bread. This is lucky for the customer who gets more bread and lucky for the baker who gets to stay out of the dungeon. I have found that baking bread is a spiritual experience. When I add that thirteenth roll or cookie to a customer’s order, I will quietly recite a quick blessing or prayer to pass on to the customer. Thirteen is that customer’s lucky number. It is my employer’s lucky number because a happy customer buys more bread. It is also my lucky number because I get to keep a job that I absolutely love. Years ago, I sought help to win the battle the great battle with Firewater. I was young and cute, I quickly discovered the adventures of the Thirteenth Step. This step occurs when a 12 Step Mentor entices a newcomer to encounters of a sensually gratifying nature. It is not entirely ethical and can lead to relapses. Indeed it did lead to a few relapses but happily, I got over it. I had to learn to do the first Twelve Steps
before the doing the Thirteenth Step. I’ve now been a teetotaler long enough to technically Thirteen Step every man in the room most of the time. Thus I can encounter a gentleman who has been a teetotaler for at least Thirteen Years; I can offer to compromise his virtue. If he is agreeable, the Thirteenth Step can be a very good thing. HOO HAH! So today is Friday the Thirteenth. Friday is the Day that Honors Freya the Goddess of Mind Boggling Whoopee and Sensuality. with the Roman Counterpart being Venus, the goddess of LOVE On this Friday the Thirteenth, I shall bake Thirteen Chocolate Chip Cookies to take to a Twelve Step Meeting that attended by mostly men. I may not be granted the permission to compromise their virtues nor would it be practical. Nevertheless, the Thirteen Cookies
will make them feel LOVED enough to stay away from John Barley Corn for another Thirteen Minutes , Thirteen Hours, Thirteen Days, Thirteen Months, Thirteen Years Times Thirteen Ad Infinitum
