Apr. 12, 2007 No, it's not because Arnold is sitting governor in California? All of a sudden reality check has been rudely thrust at/on Americans and it has been a dilemma for the ‘official’ strategy and policy makers to deliver on an impatient and oft at times fearful and shivering American peoples). One group of ‘unofficial’ policy makers and strategy frames seem to have risen to the challenge, these people are the movie maker and script writers in Hollywood California. Before now it had been the literary world and buffs who cautiously toed the lines, feeling the temperature here easily tapping the pulse of the American planet most at times under the cloak of anonymity. This allowed allowing the flak to explode harmlessly at a distance. Tom Clancy used to thrill us with near nuclear (or conventional) conflagrations between the US and post Soviet Russia and sometimes for a real roller ride we get the odd story line of the ubiquitous Middle Easterner – terrorist extraordinaire, 'have explosive suit must travel'. Mostly there was mild consternation if and too many Americans got dismembered or killed – there was a cardinal rule: kill Americans and you get killed too, and so losses of lives and body parts were kept to acceptable minimums. (It would be acceptable however if other lives say in Afghanistan, Africa were not-whole villages and entire regions) then along came (the) judicious Hollywood scriptwriters and producers and real life Americans (in movies) were being blown up and dismembered and suddenly somebody’s right not to be subjected to undue distress by TV images was not being violated, infact as the TV series ‘24’ shows us the policy and strategy makers do not reside in Washington D.C. In season 1 of ‘24’ it seems (to be) speculative that Idaho and the other podunk state – are no longer the proverbial swing states (see also the Economist, Feb. 2007) as President elect David Palmer does his handshaking and 'fleshing' in L.A. even though budget considerations weighed heavily, but here Hollywood breaks the mould by this reconfiguration. Hollywood goes a step further; David palmer actually wins and is on course to become a very good black president, he handles crisis after crisis with determination and resolve denied countless ages of blacks. To carry out then Hollywood proceeds yet another impossibility – it literally ‘kills off’ the central character and with audacity at that. It takes courage to do what Hollywood does – run America, and to be honest the business of governance even 'play governance' should be left to for those who can.
