 By Ken Hughes Apr. 6, 2007 Nancy Pelosi is on a roll will it be down hill and her undoing or will she roll over the presidency? The Democrats have a slim margin in congress not enough to sustain the over zealous powers assumed by the new speaker of the house. She’s overextended any official authority she may have had. The speaker is treading in uncharted waters in her zeal to bring down the presidency of George Bush is so she’s demonstrating a lack of self control and she’s undermining any cooperation between the Whitehouse and congress she so enthusiastically sought in the beginning. Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic collogues know they don’t have sufficient cause to bring impeachment charges against George Bush Pelosi has said as much. What she’s doing is trying to make him look irrelevant in the eyes of the public. This is a tactic that very well could come back to haunt the speaker. Democrats have often mistaken George Bush’s tenacity with stupidity Bush is slow to anger, slow being the operative word. If anyone was looking we saw this in the 2000 presidential campaign when he was unfairly challenges by both John McCain and Al Gore. There’s cretin grit and determination associated with growing up in West Texas the rest of the country may not appreciate or understand. George Bush has allowed Democrats to trample his name and presidency for the past six years it’s becoming obvious the time has come to respond. Nancy Pelosi may think she’s tough but I predict this is one campfire this little Girl Scout may wish she never started. George Bush is still President and Nancy Pelosi isn’t a fact not easily hidden from the public. If there’s a flaw in the Democrats thinking it’s they can’t distinguish their obvious from the obvious. Nearly 50 % of America still stands with the president over congress in foreign affairs as indicated in the most recent Pew Polls. The president’s approval ratings are in the mid 30 % range, congressional ratings are in the low 20 % need we say more? International diplomacy, negotiations and policy are not in a congressperson operating procedures manual. Some things are left to the Executive branch of government to determine with the advice but not the consent of congress. Congress isn’t allowed to usurp the authority of the president and substitute their authority for the presidents. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi may be leading this nation into its first constitutional crisis in two and a quarter centuries of relative calm. As I have said before giving monstrous authority to petite liberated grandmothers and you create monsters nearly every time. Nancy Pelosi has violated one of the rules of congress. The "Logan Act" makes it a felony and provides for a prison sentence of up to three years for any American, "without authority of the President or States Department," to visit a foreign country for the purpose of engaging in diplomatic discussions with said countries official leaders. Will anyone have the courage to challenge Nancy Pelosi for violating her oath to abide by the constitution and the laws of the land? For those who question the Logan Act as law please allow me: § 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments. Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. 18 U.S.C. § 953 [1799 revised and edited 2004]. Nancy Pelosi has violated the law, her oath and the decorum of her position as Speaker of the House. For those liberals who will challenge this article in Nancy Pelosi’s favor there are no exceptions in the law for Congresspersons or liberal Democrats.
