Sept. 28, 2006 Perhaps we should be bombing European and American prisons too. Or maybe we should be cutting our losses and running from the incarceration of Muslim criminals and terrorists. Two recent articles would lead one to believe the recent hubbub over the possibility the Battle of Iraq is causing an increase in terrorist recruitment is rather misdirected. The first article from MSNBC.com is: “Islamic radicalization feared in Europe 's jails Treatment of Muslim inmates varies across EU”, by Jennifer Carlile of MSNBC, dated 28 July 2006. It is a long article that goes into details concerning the lack of trained Islamic Imams and how that lack is being made up by lay preachers who are mostly criminals teaching other criminals. The main fear is that, even though the religious training is helping some, it is radicalizing others and gaining recruits for terrorist movements across Europe . A quote from the article: “The connection between criminality and Islamism is very tight in Europe ," said Michael Radu, a terrorism analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. "Every (terrorist) attack has converts, and most of them have criminal records and were converted within prisons," he said, noting the cases of British "Shoe Bomber" Richard Reid and José Emilio Suárez Trashorras, the Spaniard who supplied the explosives used in the 2004 Madrid bombings — both of whom converted while incarcerated.” The threat is a real threat and the Europeans are only now taking it seriously because of the increasing numbers of Muslim criminals being imprisoned and the surge in conversions to Islam by others in prison. Quote: “There are no statistics on prison conversions, but empirical evidence from British prisons shows that conversion to Islam is probably higher than to Christianity, according to sociology professor Jim Beckford.” The article cites these population statistics among others, quote: “Muslims account for an estimated 50 percent of France 's prison population, with some jails on the outskirts of Paris hitting 80 percent, while Muslims only account for six to ten percent of the total population. (No concrete statistics exist because it is illegal to ask a person to declare their faith in France .)” Not all Islamic teaching in Europe ’s prisons is coming from those incarcerated. There is an active program to have the more moderately known Imams visit and teach the Muslim prison population. Several examples of prisoners receiving the more radicalized teachings are given, but it is noted more than once that many prisoners who were not particularly religious before their arrest have become more participatory and less inclined to drugs and violence. The fear is that the percentage of radicalism is too high to stop the increase in recidivism among Muslim criminals. The second article, also from MSNBC.com was: “Study: Prisons can’t combat terror recruiting U.S. jails lack funds to prevent or track Islamic radicalization, report says” from the Associated Press, September 19th, 2006 which begins: “U.S. prisons are becoming major breeding grounds for Islamic terrorists, but state and local authorities are too cash-strapped to prevent or track recruiting, a new report concludes.” This “report” paints a picture that is even bleaker than the recently “leaked” sentence from the “classified” report that Democrat Senators had read in totality last April! Quoting: “The report, to be released Tuesday, found there aren’t enough legitimately trained Muslim religious leaders to counsel an estimated 9,000 U.S. prison inmates who want Islamic services. That allows Islamist extremists to target their vulnerable prison-mates with distorted versions of the Quran and other Muslim readings that urge radicalization and violence. “Radicalized prisoners are a potential pool of recruits by terrorist groups,” concludes the joint study by George Washington University and the University of Virginia . “The U.S. , with its large prison population, is at risk of facing the sort of homegrown terrorism currently plaguing other countries.” The article noted: “An estimated 2 million people are imprisoned in the United States ; 6 percent of them are Muslim, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.” So our nation has Islamic time bombs ticking on its borders and within its prisons. The main concern cited by both articles is that we don’t have enough “trained Imams” to keep the Muslim prison populations from radicalization. There is also not enough cash to continue to provide Quarans and religiously acceptable meals for the incarcerated. The call for the supposed “quagmire” that is the Battle of Iraq is for “retreat” and “redeployment” because Iraq is causing a major surge in recruitment of terrorists. Well now are these reports from Europe and America that prison is causing a surge in Islamic terrorist recruitment.
