The 1947 UN Partition of Palestine Was Theft

By Thomas Keyes
Sept. 24, 2006

I keep hearing from this website’s contributors, Tom Pain and Dr. Brooks Mick (are they different people?), that the 1947 UN Partition of Palestine into Israel and Palestine was a “world decision,” the implicit foregone conclusion being that everyone in the world agreed upon it in the first place, that it was probably the best workable solution to a nagging world problem, and that it is the Arabs’ own fault if they have not seized their golden opportunity to cooperate with such a reasonable solution to problems in the Levant.

The only catch is that Arabs, who had occupied the land for centuries, and by any reasonable criterion had a de facto claim to the land, as well as a de jure claim in most cases, opposed the partition. Most of the signatories were European and American nations, and their clients, Australia , South Africa , Liberia and the Philippines . The Arab and other Muslim countries voted against the partition unanimously. We all know also that Jews claim some sort of historical right to the land, basing this claim upon the fact that their presumed ancestors lived there from 1209 BC until 135 AD.

Suppose that someone in the UN tabled a motion to partition the US into two countries, taking into consideration that millions of Mexicans live in the southwest and elsewhere, many of them having come as legal or illegal immigrants, just as Jews entered Palestine. We know also that, until the time of the Mexican War (1846-1848), California , Nevada , Utah , Colorado , Arizona , New Mexico and Texas were a part of Mexico . So Mexicans have a much more recent claim to the southwest than Jews have to Palestine . When the motion came up for a vote in the General Assembly, let’s suppose that every country except the US , the UK and Israel supported the partition. Therefore, we would have a “world decision”. Should the United States accept it? Of course not, you’d probably say. In such a case, if the US elected to go to war, it would probably win, but let’s suppose that the foreign coalition won somehow. Should Americans just accept it then? They did what they could, but failed. Should they therefore just make the best of the new order and get on with their business?

I doubt that the average American would want to stand still for this. Even if the US lost a first war, Americans would probably wage more and more, especially if Aztlán, the new Mexican nation, started expanding little by little.

Jews started infiltrating Palestine around 1880. By 1920, they made up only 10% of the population. By 1948, the time of the declaration of the state of Israel , Jews numbered about 50% of the population. Of course, this growth was largely due to mass immigration, so that much of the Jewish population was foreign born. In 1948, Jews owned only 8% of the land, whereas Palestinians owned nearly 50%. The rest belonged to the commonwealth.

Palestinians and their Muslim allies have waged war time and time gain to recover Palestine and vindicate their rights, but have had little success. Most Americans, like Pain and Mick, who adopt the attitude that “might makes right” and that Israel’s victories entitle it to the land they’ve stolen were singing a different tune when the USSR occupied Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and usually act as if they feel that China’s attitude towards Taiwan is unjustifiable. If China should invade and conquer Taiwan , there’d be outcries throughout the US .

It’s a fact that Israel exists today, but historically its existence is entirely illegitimate. They stole the land from the Arabs, it’s as simple as that.
