Sept. 22, 2006 In answer to Tom Pain, let me say that George W. Bush and the members of his cabinet and staff provided many reasons for the invasion of Iraq, the chief two being that Iraq possessed WMD and had had operational connections with al Qaeda, the shadowy organization accused of mounting the attack on the World Trade Center. The Iraq-al Qaeda link, though Bush himself denies he made it, was alluded to many, many times by Richard Cheney and others. Some of the other reasons for the invasion that Bush and his henchmen cited included the existence of long-range missiles in Iraq, Saddam Hussein’s history of using chemical weapons, Hussein’s generally oppressive regime, ethnic persecutions in Iraq, American soldiers missing in action in Iraq, the stabilization of the Middle East, democratization, and last but not least, the protection of Israel. Actually, most of these stated reasons are rationalizations rather than reasons properly so-called. Once the war party had decided to invade Iraq , it was not hard to get their staff of wordsmiths, chicaners and sophists to dream up all the rationalizations the administration wanted. The idea that democratization, liberation from tyranny, intervening in ethnic persecutions and humanitarian concern had anything to do with the invasion is easily shown to be false by the fact that if such ideals had motivated Bush and his people, they would have turned their attention instead to the Second Congo War (1998-2003), in which 4 million people from nine nations died in circumstances of terrorism and genocide. However, those countries are distant from Israel , and do not pose a threat to Israel , so basically they don’t count. Most of Iraq ’s chemical weapons and long-range missiles were produced in the 1970’s and 1980’s and destroyed in 1991. If documents like Bush’s State of the Union address and the British intelligence dossier could be believed, one would have to conclude that not all of the agents and missiles produced were destroyed. Bush’s group made a big deal of this, but so far, it has been shown to be mere ballyhoo and brouhaha, hullabaloo and hoopla. Anyway, it has been proven that the SOTU and the dossier were mere confections of piffle and twaddle. And all the derivative reports and claims are equally preposterous. Most people may recall that in the spring or summer of 2003, two weather trailers were found in Iraq . The White House spin was that they were biological laboratories. When it turned out there were no traces—even microscopic traces—of outlawed substances, the spin was altered to make it sound as if Hussein had ordered the trucks to be “scrubbed”. This is the same kind of argument that alleges the WMD to have been destroyed or moved to another country. I, for one, knew immediately that the US didn’t invade Iraq over two trucks. So I just sat back with a knowing smirk waiting for the foolish charade to be unmasked. Then there were the aluminum tubes. It was just such a Pain to have to see these obvious hoaxes discussed online week after week, as if everyone had been too polite to call Bush a liar. As for the idea that the war was for Israel , here are a couple of articles written by Jews that speak the truth: http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/12/26/column.novak.opinion.sharon/ http://sandiego.indymedia.org/es/2003/03/5022.shtml There are hundreds more available, but I don’t think Pain wants to understand. I imagine he could if he really studied the situation, but he just wants to carry on with his partisan claptrap. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
