Sept. 22, 2006 I was watching The Tyra Banks Show the other night when Nicole Richie was a guest. Admittedly, I had been gearing up to see this particular episode because I felt that this young woman and I had something in common, in that I could possibly identify with some of the problems she would be facing in regard to her weight. Anyhow, I'll be getting to this later in the article. I wanted to expound upon the context of the show's premise. During the promos that the producers so skillfully displayed in order to get viewers to watch, I was, as I'm sure so many others were looking forward to seeing a no hold barred interview. As Tyra Banks had promised us all that Nicole Richie stated she (Tyra) could ask anything of the waif like celebrity. Ms. Richie started out by saying in so many words that she was baffled by her celebrity. She alluded to the fact that she was known primarily as Lionel Richie's daughter/Paris Hilton ex Simple Life friend and costar/Someone in the public eye who had sustained a tremendous weight loss. She wondered what she was famous for, commenting how she hadn't even started her career yet! Celebrity means news and regardless of how she might have attained her particular celebrity status, Nicole Richie is news and right now, all the buzz is about her weight loss. At some point in the show, Tyra showed pictures of Nicole, asking her to tell everyone how she saw herself. Nicole said pictures taken two years ago only showed her as younger; Someone who's still in essence trying to find her way. She did not give a satisfactory answer to the question of weight loss that the pictures so obviously show. There was no good, believable answer forthcoming when the picture of Nicole came across the screen with her at the beach in a barely there bikini. Nicole excess thinness could only be view as 'anorexic.' Yet, when asked by Tyra Banks, "Are you anorexic?" Nicole Richie states emphatically, "No, I am not anorexic." Then she goes on to berate the nerve of people to imply that she was. At another instance, we see the two celebrities trying on clothes at Tyra's "cheap store." Anyhow, the two play dress up and Tyra is snapping pictures of Nicole Richie, all the while proclaiming how she was 'working it!' I wanted to gag. The very idea that this young woman is in the throes of a serious eating disorder and everyone she's got around her is feeding her a mound of cow's manure. I wonder if daddy and mama Richie are wearing blinders. I wonder if all of those so called doctors/nutritionists/friends/ in her corner people aren't tiptoeing around the facts. This young woman is seriously in trouble and pictures tell the tale. I'm feeling for Nicole Richie because at 5'2'' and weigh in at only one hundred ten pounds, fully clothed, I've had my share of weight phobia pangs. Only, I'm not anorexic and never have been. This sister is all about the food. Nicole Richie will beat this thing, I'm sure, but, the first order of business is admitting that she has a problem. It's the job of all of those people she got around her to help her see and come to grips with her reality. By overcoming her denial, she'll be better able to answer the next talk show host who dares to ask, "Are you anorexic?" by answering, "Yes, but, I have a professional team of people working with me to make me whole again." ------------ About the author: Clara B.
