Sept. 13, 2006 U-K columnist Fred Smith keeps making a fool of himself by failing to spell-check his articles and by making spurious claims against John Waters which he doesn't and can't justify. This article identifies some of the errors Fred makes in his recent article. You can probably find others. Fred starts the article out by calling John a "New Age mystic." This is a big mistake. If Fred had studied mysticism and the New Age movement he would know that such people tend to be strongly anti-intellectual. When it comes to understanding a difficult subject (such as inspiration), New Agers and mystics tend to dismiss logical arguments as less relevant than their dreams, their visions, and their intuitions. John, on the other hand, respects all kinds of intelligence, not just certain kinds of intelligence. Note that Fred Smith rejects rational intellect and the rules of valid argumentation when he writes, "John Waters spends much time and many words making humanism out to be a scourge likely because his own Yogic-superpowers wouldn't stand up to scrutiny; neither would faith healing, ghost "research" and numerology." Note in this claim Fred doesn't justify his use of the word "likely" and he can't justify it. Fred is hoping you won't care about his error. Fred's second error is his linking John's work up with "faith healing, ghost "research" and numerology." Fred is being really deceptive and dishonest here. Shame on you, Fred! Fred continues making errors as he writes, "John makes many errors during our exchanges, mistakes made mostly due to his ignorance of the matters involved." Well, Fred makes this claim but he doesn't give even one example to back it up. Fred really needs to study the rules of valid argumentation. Because Fred doesn't back up this claim, it is fallacious. Again, Fred hopes you don't notice or care about this lack of validity. Here's a funny bit. Fred keeps asking John Waters if he eats lobster, because in one article John wrote that when he was much younger he felt compassion for a mud dauber wasp being gravely damaged by a non-compassionate professional scientist. John still has compassion. However, after being a total vegetarian for 23 years, doctors strongly advised John to eat meat occasionally. Fred needs to know that John Waters does not eat lobster because John gets enough meat from other sources. John eats a bit of meat three or four times a month, and John does not kill animals for sport, for a trophy, or for some advanced scientific degree or other token of prestige. John does occasionally slap a mosquito or swat a fly. John does not use chemical sprays and John is not a Jain. Let’s consider the next error by Fred Smith. He writes, "I'll also show in future articles that John is in fact a Luddite and dislikes not just the institution of science, but those folks who work in scientific endeavors." Quixotic fanatical Fred is jousting with windmills. Fred simply gives no evidence to back up the previous claims. On the other hand, to show you that Fred is wrong, John presents three letters of recommendation from three different professional scientists he has repeatedly visited with and worked with. Letter number one is the former Humboldt State University Dean of Science and Biologist Dr. Ray Barratt. Letter number two is from Dr. Kathleen Preston, a retired HSU Psychology professor. Letter number three is from Dr. James Knight, a retired HSU Psychology professor. The next error Fred makes is equally invalid. He writes, "Perhaps those 75 credits of college that John said he took didn't cover the concepts in and around the miracle of farming." Well, of course they didn't, because John wrote that he took 75 semester units in mathematics, and Fred just ignored the truth or deceptively masked it. Courses in calculus, differential equations, non-Euclidean geometry, set theory, and similar topics are not about farming. Fred Smith repeatedly masks, distorts, makes fallacious claims, and makes false accusations he can't prove. John isn't going to continue finding flaws in Fred's article because John has already displayed several gross errors and there are so many more. A professor of English or philosophy would probably grade Fred's paper a D or an F because Fred has made so many errors. ------------ About the author: sixty-six years young, and vigorous in mind, body, emotions, and spirit, John L. Waters is an independent researcher on self-healing, integration, creativity, and unity. To help demonstrate the effectiveness of his research, John has created thousands of drawings, paintings, instrumental music pieces, songs, prose pieces, poems, and other inventions. John has used his research to help persons remove a mental block and solve a problem. John also gives personal presentations which illustrate his research results. Each one of these works demonstrates the effectiveness of John's research.
