Sept. 2, 2006 Keith Cantrell is at it again, writing one of his short sharp articles that go Snap! Crackle! and Pop! Keith's prose is crisp and clean. Oh I wish this preceding statement were always true! Keith's recent effort to attack on religion is a flop. I counted twenty-six errors or dubious points. There are so many errors in this article that in this brief response I can't discuss even a quarter of them. Keith usually writes well, and I find his articles about The Bible to be informative and thought-provoking. But in his article entitled " Creationism, Evolution And The Future Of Humanity " Keith is biting off a lot more than just The Bible. For one thing, Keith uses the word "evolution," but right away he focuses on the evolution of plants and animals. The word "evolution" itself includes the evolution of stars, the evolution of planets, the evolution of galaxies, the evolution of living cells, the evolution of plants, the evolution of animals, the evolution of elementary particles, the evolution of individual species, and the evolution of the universe itself. Some people devote their entire lives to studying just one of these types of evolution. The subject of evolution is vast. Furthermore, what was there BEFORE everything began evolving? I don't see where Keith discusses the origin of existence. In many instances the myth of God is used to explain the origin of existence. I read through Keith's article and actually inserted twenty-six short responses in response to his incompleteness or his lack of proof, or some other error. Keith's article is as shot through with fallacies as Saint Sebastian was shot through with arrows. An English professor would have red-inked Keith's manuscript into a bloody mess. I do not attack Keith the man. He simply needs to be more careful in his writing. A professor of English would have advised Keith to write the paper over. Please note that I, John Waters, am not a fanatic for reason and logic. I have grown to respect a person who is very reasonable and logical, but more often than not I am more intuitive than logical, and sometimes I say or write a statement that I do not back up. When an editor catches my mistake, I try to correct it. This is one reason I often request repeated editorial assistance. But when I write I tend to make intuitive leaps. This intuitiveness is why I can't claim myself to be a secular humanist, not when the humanists say they are so logical and so reasonable. But when Keith Cantrell promotes the humanist agenda and says in his paper, "Simple reason and logic should be sufficient to guide us into the future even though the truth is often hard to accept." and "Use your brains not your emotions," the reader needs to examine Keith's writing and point out to him the logical errors, and Keith needs to correct these errors to avoid being correctly labeled an hypocrite. So now you expect me to prove my case by pointing out a number of errors that Keith has made in his pro-humanism article "Creationism, Evolution And The Future Of Humanity." Therefore I will focus on three instances. 1. Keith writes, "...creationism denies diversity. According to this idea everything is exactly the way God made it so change is unnecessary." John says this is not necessarily so. Some theists believe that God created the world and just let nature take things from that point. They would say that evolution can continue but God is/was the Creator. 2. Keith writes, "Humans, after all, are the only species on the entire planet with the ability to alter their evolution. That's because we are the only organisms with a highly developed cerebral cortex which allows us to think abstractly and to consider the world apart from ourselves." [[John says, how do you know this, Keith? You don’t prove this statement.]] Keith then goes on, saying, "This self-awareness makes us the most advanced and intelligent of all the life forms on earth [[John asks, "How can humans be so bloody intelligent when they keep on destroying the living world?]] and that means we alone can assume responsibility for the ultimate fate of the entire planet. [[John says that humans do not really control the whole planet. Clark Kent, Spiderman, and other sci-fi fantasies are myths.]] 3. Keith continues, "That's because we also possess the capability to destroy the entire planet through our invention of technology or we can use that same technology to make the earth into a paradise. [[John says, Okay, so how are the humanists actually going to turn Earth into a paradise? Most people today are not humanists.]] Keith goes on, "So, it would be in our best interest to eliminate characteristics of our behavior that stifle our development and keep us from evolving to a higher level of existence." [[That sounds noble, but whose idea of "higher" is correct, and what is the proof?]] These errors are in the first three paragraphs, and there are some twenty-three other errors left to deal with. My suggestion to Keith is to rewrite this article and back up all claims so as to not be an hypocritical advocate of logic and reason.
