Oct. 27, 2006 Sophia was five feet and ten inches tall. She had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. Her voice was a bit raspy, and she had a nondescript yet pretty look. She liked to wear hats, and collected them. She wore little makeup, and always a men’s watch, because it was larger, and more practical, more sturdy. She worked as a travel agent and enjoyed her career. At thirty-two, she was still unmarried. She had never had a serious boyfriend, though she dated once and a while. On weekends, she’d often go away to a cabin with friends, where she enjoyed trying to draw pictures of landscapes. She was not that good at it, and knew this, but enjoyed it nevertheless. There was time to read on such weekends, and this she enjoyed too. She never seemed to finish any book, but had been interested in many. She treated novels like art books or picture books, and didn’t just sit and read them through, but rather looked here or there, and might open to any random page and start reading for ten pages, and then stop, without even marking that page. Lately, she had started to read, looking at random pages again, Islands in the Stream, by Hemingway. One day, while having a picnic in a field with her friend Chloe, Sophia had an idea. They’d been talking about some houses they had seen on the drive to the cabin, and more specifically about the wrap around porches. Sophia had thought hey were great, and a world unto themselves, since they had so much space. Chloe had agreed. Sophia’s idea was to somehow, create a coffee table book about porches. Chloe thought it was a queer idea at first, but came around when Sophia described it in more detail. A good thing too, as Chloe was a photographer, and Sophia’s plan was to have her take the pictures of the porches. The book, ideally, would be a big project, and feature one hundred porches from around the world. Each picture of a porch would have a short description, written by Sophia, which included its general location, and a few other words. The working title, already in Sophia’s mind at that moment, was simply, Porches of the World. It took about six years, with much work and travel, but the Porches book got done. It turned out to be successful too. But Sophia, though she had chances, never made other books. It had been a one-time thing. She was happy. ------------ Email Brian Michael Barbeito: Brian1750@Hotmail.com Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com and are not allowed to be posted on other websites.
