Oct. 26, 2006 Once upon a time, a long long time ago, in a land called America, lived many men. And these men all vied to be the leader of this place. The villagers and people had their own ideas and concerns. And these men who wanted to be leader had to let the people know what they thought of the problems and causes. Was it a big ogre that has come to take over a village, was it a plague that was harming other villages, was it a big monster to take them from one place to another. And so after each man stood and told all the villages about their concerns and what they thought, the villagers voted on who they wanted to be their leader. If they didn’t like who it was and he changed after he became their leader they would either run him out on rail, stone him or, as in some cases cut off his head and post it on a spike for all others to see that the villagers were unhappy. And so dear children what do we see here as an example in this bedtime story, Don’t piss off the villagers. Jump forward to 2006: Tennessee is losing a Senator, Frist is stepping down, which leaves us with an open vacancy in the senate. Our two contenders are Corker and Ford. Only one of these two actually presents his platform and how he stands on a variety of important national and state issues. And of both only Ford stands for and by his convictions, ideas, principals and voters. This competition as of the last on television debate degraded with Corker turning it into a full-blown Mud slinging event. Ford however has stood tall and presented a Gentlemanly side, by sticking to the issues and not being sidetracked, which is in the end what counts. Corker on the other hand has stood fast on one issue, he has decided to sidestep and avoid the issues. Instead opting to blow his own horn and do some self-aggrandizing. As a mater of fact we just don’t know how Corker stands on many of the issues facing the State of Tennessee. Ford jr. On the other hand has made his platforms and voice on a number of issues. One of the most important is fuel. Corker skirted the issue by Ford maintains his stand that we can and do have the technology and resources for producing our own fuel. He's in favor for Alaska oil drilling, I do believe that he would also be for conservation and minimal impact. But no one has asked him. He is for education reform, he is for healthcare he is for anything that would bring our state up to levels never before seen. Maybe under Senator Thompson it was good start. Corker on the flip side refuses to answer the questions, In a debate on local television, it was clear that corkers only method of proving himself is to be a Bully. A finger pointer, a name caller, Such childish behavior for a person who wants to lead the state in the senate is something that the people have to be crazy to want. While the election is fast coming up on us, one has to realize that this state is in bad shape. Tennessee on a whole is failing NCLB, UT keeps raising tuition and yet if you transfer to another school there are major discrepancies as to what you have to go back and take. High schools are loosing ground as far as maintaining a 3rd-6th grade reading and math level. And a majority of Tennessee schools still has a high concentration of teenage pregnancies and dropouts. Tennessee still has farmers that need help in surviving. While we produce enough for our state and other states, the extras that other agriculture farming areas get are just not available here. So it perpetuates the dirt farmer level in many small counties, where farmers who want to make an impact on their own livelihood and bring their standard of living up, is just not available. Unless you know someone who knows someone and you can barter and handshake contracts the small farmer is out of the market. Alternative fuel sources are available and manageable. We can grow and produce our own ethanol and soybean fuel. We can use alternative methods. And there is no reason why TVA electric rates should be high as they took property and dammed up and create hydroelectric power. And why should 96,000 chronically ill people be forced out of any medical care. The list can go on and on. Farmers can count on Ford at the very least give a good fight for their needs and interests. To give them incentives to go beyond what has been safe, While Corker is out for the ultra suburbanite in debt person. Will Ford and Corker ever address these issues, perhaps Corker will one day but I can tell you Ford already has and made his platform and ideas public. Corker however stands firm on evasion and manipulation to address what really needs to be done his platform is a party platform on a local lake. It will be an interesting race to say the least. ------------ About the author: Currently Julia is working on creating new books of Folk Crafts from History and getting entries ready for competitions and state fairs.
