Oct. 24, 2006 According to a study conducted by Lovenstein Institute, a think-tank in Scranton, Pennsylvania, President George W. Bush was estimated to have the lowest IQ among the last twelve presidents. The estimates were based upon examination of the unghosted writings of the presidents, their showing in unrehearsed public interviews and other psychological factors. The IQ’s varied from a high of 182, scored by William F. Clinton, to a low of 91, scored by George W. Bush. It may be a little surprising to see that William F. Clinton and James E. Carter did so well, but all of the other scores seem to fit very well with what an honest casual observer might judge to be the case. The scores are as follows: Franklin D. Roosevelt---147; Harry Truman---132; Dwight D. Eisenhower—122; John F. Kennedy—174; Lyndon B. Johnson—126; Richard M. Nixon—155; Gerald R. Ford---121; James E. Carter—176; Ronald W. Reagan---105; George H. W. Bush—98; William F. Clinton---182; and last, as well as least, George W. Bush—91. The relevant fact sheet can be examined at this URL: http://www.lovenstein.org/report/ Shortly after I became aware of the Lovenstein Presidental IQ Report, I discovered a number of websites that denounced it as a hoax or a joke. So I dropped the subject at that point, not wishing to be led after a will-o’-the-wisp. But on mature reflection, I have begun to wonder if the debunkers of the report aren’t Bush-appointed cyber-hitmen seeking to whitewash the dark news of Bush’s poor showing. Of course, George W. Bush is famous for his hilarious malapropisms, including these: "I like my buddies from west Texas. I liked them when I was young, I liked them then I was middle-age, I liked them before I was president, and I like them during president, and I like them after president."—Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 1, 2006 "I mean, there was a serious international effort to say to Saddam Hussein, you're a threat. And the 9/11 attacks extenuated that threat, as far as I am concerned."—Philadelphia, Dec. 12, 2005 "The best place for the facts to be done is by somebody who's spending time investigating it." --Washington D.C., July 18, 2005 "It's in our country's interests to find those who would do harm to us and get them out of harm's way."—Washington, D.C., April 28, 2005 "This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. And having said that, all options are on the table."—Brussels, Belgium, Feb. 22, 2005 Others can be read at this website: http://www.slate.com/id/76886/ Of couse, when someone is speaking extemporaneously or answering questions thrown from all directions at once in a press conference or interview, it is easy to make slips of the tongue, so we mustn’t be overly critical of Bush’s multitudinous gaffes and boners. Still one wonders if the Lovenstein Report isn’t a serious piece of work after all.
